Hello there,

I am soon going to begin the process of growing my own plants and I had a few questions that need to be answered.

What type of light should I use? This includes the wattage and type(cfl, hps, etc.) I am growing in an area of about 6x6ft. and am expecting to grow five plants.

Second, I was wondering what type of soil to use, I know to keep an eye out for a pH level of around 6.5 but which types of soil would you recommend?

And third, any other supplies that you would suggest using please list.

Any help or reccomendations are greatly appreciated.

Peace,
Smoked Out

Im not really experienced with the more expensive stuff.. So if money is an issue like with me..

Get yourself 4+ (If for 1 plant) 6500 23W CFLs (For Veg) and 4+ 2700 23W CFLs.

Go to lowes and get some Socket Addapers and Y addapters.. The Y Addapters Screw into the sockter addapters. so you can put 2 Lightes Per Socket.

Get yourself one of those PH testers for a swimming Pool.. helps you test Water Prewatering and Runoff of soil after watering.

A PH/Moisture Meeter.. Lowes/Homedepot.

A Timer to plug your lights into..

Some Mylar if you can find it.. my local hydroponics store carries it.. Its a reflective material you should line your grow box/room with..

A lot of people have success with "Foxfarm" Brand Soil and such..

And some Blackstrap Molassas (For during flowering..)

As far as nutes go... I cant really give ya great advice.. Depends on what ya have access to.

Hope that helps a little *Still a newb though*\

Also.. "IF" you only have access to soils such as Miracle Grow.. Go Organic..

Thank you for some advice and reccomended supplies, would you please explain what a nute is?
Nutrients.. Fertilizer

Right on the front label are the numbers 15-30-15. The first 15 represents the nitrogen content (N). The 30 represents the phosphate, or phosphorus content (P). The last 15 represents the potash, or potassium content (K). N-P-K, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, are the three basic, essential macronutrients all plants require in relatively large amounts in order to live.

Nitrogen (N) makes plants vigorous and green. Green is good. This is why lawn fertilizers have such a big first number, such as 22 or 30 or 33.

Phosphorus (P) promotes root development, which is why bulb food has a relatively large middle number.

Potassium (K) aids in blooming and fruiting, but since, as we learned in the previous column, this is something plants have a pretty good handle on, this third number is never huge and is rarely larger than the first two.

The size of the number indicates the amount by volume; mix up a gallon of Miracle-Gro and the gallon of water contains 15% nitrogen, 30% phosphorus and 15% potassium. Note that the ratio of these three numbers is the same as the all-purpose 5-10-5 garden food mentioned above; Miracle-Gro just packs a bigger wallop. If it's a box of granular fertilizer marked 10-10-10, the box contains 10% each of N-P-K, and 70% filler. And yes, in terms of potency, or how much to use, two cups of 10-10-10 equals one cup of 20-20-20, water solvable or granular. There the simplicity ends.

If you are strapped for cash I reccomend 250w HPS from seed to harvest. HPS provides the most lumens and light penetration for the price. I got mine for 99$ from HTGSupply. 250w would be perfect for your grow space.

As for soil, I use Fox Farm Oceanforest soil. Great stuff and 100% organic, made up of bat guano, fish/crab meal, earthworm castings, peat moss and all that good stuff. It is specially formulated for the perfect pH levels for optimum fertilizer uptake.
