First time fem seed attempt. Q’s

Looking to make fem seeds:

I have the materials to make STS spray ready to go. I currently have three strains as mothers. All three are from fem seeds I bought. I have blueberry, ice cream and Jack Herer Fast
I understand that to breed strains together it is best to use regular seeds if you’re looking to work with stable genetics As it is my first seed making attempt I’m just thinking of spraying each of these 3 mothers and then taking the pollen from them and pollinating a clone or two of the same plant. Not crossing anything, just using blueberry pollen on blueberry etc. would this produce stable fem seeds since no new genetics are being introduced?

Also, would it be a waste of time to, for example, take some ice cream pollen and pollinate a JH clone since they both originated from feminized seeds? Would this cross introduce herm tendencies since the plants aren’t from regular seeds?

Lastly, if I take a cutting off each of my 3 mothers to start a new mother plant of each and then spray sts on my old mother plants and just let the fem pollen pollinate itself… would the seeds from that plant be any different then pollinating non-sprayed clones of the same plant?

that depends on the stability of the mother plants themselves. You can cross pollinate your other mothers no problem, CSI does that all the time.

Great to know. Planning on pollinating clones off the sprayed mothers but maybe will also try some JH pollen on an ice cream and blueberry etc.

I'm sure someone will come along, and either validate or correct me.. but I believe reversing a fem seed for pollen can be problematic, and will be less stable than if a reg - female was reversed. Fem seeds already have that small percentage to herm out. The weak genes will herm out over a simple climate swing. I would dig a little more before committing to the work. Good luck tho. Update the thread once you came to a decision, and let us know how things went. I've also been interested in reversing. I have the spray.. actually have some sensi star pollen in the freezer. I took a cut from a reg female, left it in a cup under 12/12, and sprayed it for the next 3 weeks. I have no clue if the pollen is viable.. I'll test ot out sooner or later.

Very interesting. I never thought there would be issues taking a plant grown from fem seed and spraying it with STS and then pollinating clones from the same plant. Figured it’s already fem and no new genetics are being added so I’d get 100% fem and true seeds just like the mother. I did understand that crossing two different plants this way both from fem seed COULD be problematic as the genetics are being mashed together. Hopefully someone can chime in who has lots of experience with this. Thanks!

The genetics are not being mashed together. Meiosis, pollen production, and fertilization all proceed exactly the same way as with regs. You'll get 100% fem, because Cannabis uses the XY sex determination system, but how true breeding the mother is depends on how homozygous the genes are (i.e. how stable they are, not the stoner definition of "stable genetics") Each heterozygous gene has a 25% chance of coming up homo-recessive in each seed, easily shown with a Punnet square. This is basic genetics I learned in 9th grade and something you can't pick up just by growing weed.

Thanks for the reply Observe & Report. My ice cream is from Paradise seeds, the Jack herer fast from Quebec seeds and the blueberry from Canuck seeds. Having nothing to really go on but seed company prestige, I’d guess the ice cream seed would be the best guess at being the most stable. Again, purely based on it coming from the more prominent breeder. Obviously, it’s just a guess.
From what I’m reading so far I suppose I’ll stick to my initial plan and see what happens. Hoping for good fems from the ones that aren’t being crossed and fully expecting some surprises if I do decide to make crosses.

Thanks for all the replies. Seem to be getting opinions via private msg all over the place in what to expect and some saying it’s a waste of time without using female plants from regular seeds. I’m a little surprised in the variety of responses but in the end it’s up to me to give it a shot and see what I get. Or scrap the project all together and just save my mothers from fem seeds for clones and start making seeds purely off regular seeds or reversing females that come from reg seeds. I appreciate the responses.
