Fluorescent lighting is fine, just keep it close. No need for 600 watts for a single seedling.

I respectfully disagree (with photos) saving pennies on electricity cheats your plant out of a head start like this:

@ 9, 14, and 21 days under 1000w HID

As for light placement, place your hand palm down at the height of the top of your seedling. If the light is too warm for the back of your hand then it is too hot for your seedling. Adjust often if necessary. Happy Growing :weed:

I'm not trying to be an ass, but this little guy is only 7 days old today under cfls DSCN1592.jpg

I think the rate in which they grow has more variables then just light :p

... It isn't about saving pennies. Seedlings do just fine under something like a T5, it isn't cheating them out of anything and the bulbs can be within 2-3 inches of the plants. The seedlings will grow just like that and fluorescent can easily be used for 2-3 weeks.

I always start my seedlings under fluorescent lighting, typically I use a single 23 watt CFL for 2 or 3 days then I'll add a few more bulbs for another week or so, then to HID.

Using HID for a new born seedlings is just plain stupid because it's not only a waste of electricity but is consuming the life span of an expensive bulb, and has a much higher risk of over-heating the seedling. HPS is not ideal for vegging but does work, so if you don't have a MH bulb, then don't be in a hurry to use your HID
