First Harvest... How Soon Should I Harvest????

that may be a bit to soon i guess it depends on the strain also but i would try and hold out another week or 2. you can buy a magnifying glass i had a 30x which was nice but still hard to see everything i recently bought one that does 100x i havnt gotten a chance to use yet, anyway you can look at the trichomes to see if they are ready if im correct and i used to know but i think clear is not ready, milky white is alright but still needs more time i think amber color is what you really want i believe that has to do with maturity... goodluck

id go another 10 days just to get some more weight on them. from what i can see youve got some cloudy trichs. when they start to go amber definatly chop. thats when it starts turning into a sleepy drag you down type of high. ( unless this is what your looking for). I prefer an active high...nice job for your 1st grow.

Thanks for the input guys, those pics were taken on day 47 flower. i think im gonna chop her down on day 55 or so which is this upcoming weekend.

Nothing wrong with harvesting when you wish, and I can't see the trichs, but those babies look like they have a LOT of time left before they are ready. When buds are ready, I've found that they seriously fatten up, and become dense. Those look quite a bit fluffy and ways away from being ready. If you are on day 55, I've never really seen bud at day 55 that didn't need another 30 days of flower.

I would wait atleast 7-10 days. But you can do this since it is your first harvest. Cut one bud off and then one in a week and then one in two weeks. That way you will see for yourself the differences and what you like best.

I'm not trying to sound like a smartass but im not going to let this plant go another 30 days of flower. Today im on day 51 from the day i saw the pistils and am planning on harvesting in 5 days. I feel like these will be over ripe if i waited another 4 weeks, all of my plants are very very indica so i think they will need to go 85 days of flowering man.

Here's an update of my Plants that are gonna be harvested later this week.

The bigger, somewhat purple plant is Northern Lights and the other, more frosty is AK48. both from nirvana.

These pics were taken on the morning of day 50 flower.

Heres them in the tent on Day 46 of flower, the two leftmost are only on day 32 in the picture.

Thanks man! I'm also very excited to harvest, if I want to harvest only part of the plant at a time do i just start cutting off the top buds? I think i will want to do this to my biggest plant to possibly increase yield. It seems as if this will stress the plant and just waste time. Can anyone clear up how this happens?

Well tell us the difference from 58 day NL and 68+ day NL? I mean what drove you to longer times, and what were you trying to achieve? I mean not knocking but you through out numbers without any reference why, and what to look for. I know when and how to harvest, but always like hearing others if they incline to share.

Please do brother.

Hehe, I always say, I'm no expert. I just have had quite a few grows, and surprisingly each one gets better than the previous. In terms of what works for me, what doesn't, what makes things easier etc......

But for my harvest timing...... Initially, particularly with that first grow, seems like me and everyone else is just pretty excited about it. Which makes sense, and you can't wait to chop that puppy down!!! So my first grow, I didn't check trichs.... I was pretty much looking for any excuse to cut it down so I could sample all of my hard work. But, don't get me wrong, I am not that guy that would tell anyone how they should conduct their grow. Imo, for the hobbyist like me, it should be somewhat fun.

So I hope I didn't come off as preachy or anything, as I just look to share the few things I've learned since I began if someone asks. I think I'm a newb at it myself. So we're all in the same camp.

But back to the question, mainly I was looking to chop initially based on the advertised time of the seedbank. Which usually seems to never work out that way for anyone. Now, mainly to judge harvest time, I look at the trichs through my magnifying glass, and I like to see the majority of cloudy trichs. I no longer use time for anything except a general gauge. I.e. based on MY personal setup, and how my plants typically like to grow, I don't even bother to look at trichs till about day 70 of flower, which is why I still keep track of my days pretty religiously, just for a general idea and for historical purposes.

So I can pretty much tell, based number of days, density of my buds, color of the calayxes, when there is no more white growth, as vertical growth stops, how quickly they are absorbing water, and other things before I start to look at my trichs close-up..... mainly because I've done it so many times. So basically, just like you BigBuddah, eventually you just kinda "get to know your grow."

Hey Pelt, thanks for writing up that info, its always nice to be able to learn from people who have already experienced it. Im interested in your northern lights hermied grows as my NL hermied this time and I would love to be able to use those seeds. How were your grows with the hermied seeds? I have read that some seeds from a hermied plant will be a hermied because of the stress that the mother endured. But I have also found articles relating to specific strains and hermaphrodite plants passing on the trait to the kids. How did the number of seeds in your hermie grow compare to the plant your first got the seed from?

I have opened up to seeds from my NL and they look fully mature and dark in color. I would love to be able to use these seeds and have all the same strain from the same parent as well.

I wish I had a way to look at the trichs, i want to get a microscope but the radioshack by my place is just a cell phone store. As of right now im basing my opinion off of the color of the pistils and the color of the buds, which doesnt tell me much haha But even though im gonna harvest early I love that either way im gonna be getting high from my own buds, and it'll keep some more sativa characteristics.
