First Grow - Newbie Questions

Hey all,

Going for my first grow this year, and I have a couple of questions about getting started. Not a good idea for me to start seedlings indoors, so I'm planning on putting seeds directly into the ground. I've been told the last frost date in my area is around May 20. My seeds are Early Misty, and the foliage around here gets yellow in early-mid September. Will my plants have enough time for to be ready for harvest without starting them indoors?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Peace and Love.

just because you start them indoors isnt going to make them finish any faster since your putting them out may 20th. although starting them indoors will make a good root system and a stronger plant so when you do put it outside it will have a better chance to survive. if you start inside make sure you harden them off before planting them.
when the daylight and the night time are around 12/12 the plant will start to flower. when its time to harvest is around the time frame for your strain.

here read up.

Just get a shit load of bagseeds on top of your early misty because not all will survive. Its better to plant a lot of seeds than it is to concentrate on 10 good seeds. My friend shroomie told me this:lol:

Find out when the average first frost is for your area; that'll tell you more than what week the leaves turn yellow. You want to get them in before the frost if you can, although I've gotten decent harvests a couple of weeks after an early frost. Everything just works out a whole lot better on a lot of levels if you can get them in before the frost.

Also, if you must plant directly in the ground, at least soak the seeds overnight in a glass of water before planting. If you can even sprout them to an inch or so, that's a little bit better than planting right in the ground. Even just the tiniest of head starts is still a head start.

Thanks for the advice. Been doing some reading, but will continue to do more. Looks like I have a little time to consider starting my seeds indoors, and will definitely germinate them before putting them in the ground, at any rate.

FarmersAlmanac.com lists the average frosts for my location as 4/29 and 10/17. There's a thread for PA growers 2009, so I'm gonna follow that too.

I'm sure I'll have more questions, but thanks so far!

So, I germinated 6 of 10 seeds, and all 6 were successful. I started two plots with 3 seeds each, and will wait at least a couple of weeks before I germinate the last 4. The forecast calls for rain over the next few days, so hopefully my babies will sprout soon enough.

Hell yeah. I bought some of that green garden fencing and cut it into 12' sections, then folded it into fourths to get 4 even walls. I wrapped the wire from one end around the other to create a box and trimmed off the bottom edge, so there's about 2-3" of wires sticking into the ground. No posts to hold it up, but because it's stuck in the ground there's been no movement so far. I'm thinking of cutting off the top edge and bending out the wires a little bit, so deer will think twice and birds can't land on the fence.

My friend grew Early Misty a couple years ago it has a nice short flowering time and make very sweet resinous buds. If you are going to start your seedlings outside, you might want to wait as late as June 1st, they'll still have about 2- 3 months to veg and then they should be all set until late September, I would let them stay outside until you see the first signs of mold or you get a couple heavy frosts. Early Misty is a fairly durable strain and should be able to take a couple frosts in the early fall.

It may be a good idea to grow you seedlings under glass jars until they get a little bigger, to protect them from mammals, slugs, and the elements. Essentially you create a mini greenhouse environment.

Right now, I have 6 germinated seeds in the ground. I have 4 left, and was going to wait at least 2 more weeks before germinating them. So, maybe I'll take your advice and wait a full month before I put them in.

Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate it. I'll post some pics once I have plants above ground.

Damo, good to see another PA grower here. Just out of curiosity do you live in northern or southern PA? Anyway back to the topic, I never tried an outdoor grow but the new house I am living at has a nice woodland plot next door so I think I will try this year. I am going to wait a little longer before planting outside due to the fact that it is still inconsistent temperatures. Ill get pics up once things get going.

I'm in southern PA. Everything gets so green from all the rain around here, so it just seems natural to put some seeds out there and let mother nature bring me some sweet herb.

I've left the seeds alone for about 48 hours now, so I'm going to check on them tomorrow and see if anything sprouted.

that's awesome I live in southern Pa also. Gotta love the warm weather we have been having. Good luck with the grow, I'll be checking back to see how things are going.

We've had a lot of rain with patches of sunshine over the last week, so I've pretty much left the seeds alone to do their thing. I checked on them last night, and was very happy to find 5 little sprouts with 2 leaves each :)

I'll give it a few more days and post a photo.

Correction - there are 6 little babies, each with 4 leaves now. Mother Nature - do your thing!

Yea we have been getting a ton of rain lately. I started to germinate the random seeds I have collected. Not sure their strains but being my first grow I really don't care. I think I am going to start them in a window for a few weeks then transplant outside. We should meet up sometime if you live near York and have a smoke and talk about our babies.
