First grow - Easy Ryders under CFLs in soil

Ok, so as the title indicates this is my first grow. I've spent the better part of a month reading as much as I could and asking questions once I knew enough to know what I didn't know lol. At this point I'm pretty confident that I'm going to have a pretty good grow first grow, but I'm a little apprehensive about the watering and about nutes. People are encouraged to post in this thread if they see something about the plant growth that doesn't look right and they have corrective advice to offer, or even if they just want to offer support if they think the girls are looking good.

I'm going to be growing 4 of my Easy Ryders indoors and 1 outdoors, but my first girl (Sarah) is going to be grown indoors under CFLs. I decided to use a space under my desk in my home office, which is about 27" tall. I purchased the largest cardboard box I could find at Home Depot, which was 18"W, by 18"L, and 24" tall. It turned out to be the PERFECT size, both because it allowed for a few inches of clearance under the desk, and because it PERFECTLY holds 4 square, 2-gallon plastic pots that I bought from a local Hydro shop.

The Box
I sealed up one end of the box with tape and cut the other end of the box off, and then lined the 3 sides of the box with reflective Mylar that I purchased from a local Hydro shop. I placed the box with the sealed end on the floor, and the side without the Mylar pointed toward the open side of the desk where I would be accessing the box. Next I cut a hole about halfway down the box (and in the Mylar) for a 4" cabinet fan, which can be used as an intake or exhaust fan depending on which direction the fan is mounted to the box. I then made two cuts in the side of the box that was facing outward toward me from under the desk. The two cuts were about 1/4" inward from either side of the box and extended downward about half the length of the box toward the floor. I then bent the cardboard toward me and toward the floor. This created a flap that I could open anytime I wanted in order to easily access the plants and lights inside the box, without having to slide the box out from under the desk. Once I created the flap I lined that side of the box with Mylar as well. Lastly, I fashioned a base for the box since the pots didn't come with bases and I couldn't find any for them. I used tinfoil roasting pans with 1" sides that I cut and joined using staples and shipping tape, and then covered with a plastic waterproof drop cloth when it was finished. At this point the grow box is DONE! :)

The Lighting
Next I needed lighting. I purchased 4, 8" reflective light bulb holders with clamps from Home Depot, and I removed the clamps since I was going to be draping the lights down into the box. I also purchased 5 short extension cords and a light bulb to electrical plug adapter, along with some adhesive hooks that can be mounted anywhere. I placed the completed box underneath the desk with the flap facing outward and the open top of the box facing upward. I had about 3" of clearance which was perfect. I measured and placed the hooks on the underside of the desk so that they would be directly above of the 4 pots in the box below. I place a 5th hook directly over the middle of the box, where there was just enough room to hang a single lightbulb in between the 4 reflective bases that would be hanging above each pot. I bought an assortment of 23w and 42w CFLs in 2700K and 6500K color spectrums. All told, with 4-23W-1750 Lumen bulbs, and 1-42W-2600 Lumen bulb, I was putting out about 9600 Lumens to cover a 1.5 square foot space. By everything I read you ideally need about 5,000 Lumens per square foot, so that should be more than enough Lumens for that space. Lighting - DONE! :)

Now that the hard work was done, it was time for the fun part! :leaf:

Ordering The Seeds
I purchased 5 Easy Rider (fem) seeds from Attitude seed bank on 8-9-10. I used the T-shirt stealth shipping option just to make sure that I didn't waste all that money only to have the seeds seized by customs. The seeds shipped on 8-10-10 via Royal Mail/USPS First Class Mail Intl., however their website doesn't tell you which shipping method was used, only the tracking #. I had to contact Attitude to find out what shipping method was used so that I could track the delivery. Shipment was uneventful and I received my seeds promptly on 8-16-10.

Prepping The seeds
I wasted no time when I received my seeds, and I immediately placed one Easy Ryder seed in a small shot glass of tap water filtered using a Brita filtration system. (I decided to only germinate and plant one seed at first, and make sure it germinated and started to grow properly before I germinated and planted the other 4 seeds.) I placed the shot glass on top of the water heater for warmth, and covered it with a plastic cup to block out all light. About 8 hours later I checked on the seed, which had not yet floated to the bottom of the glass. I used a knife to push the seed underwater and see if it floated back to the top but it sank to the bottom, which is the indicator that the seed is ready for stage 2.

Germinating
I thorougly moistened a paper towel using the water from the shot glass, and placed it on a paper plate. I removed the seed from the shot glass, careful not to touch it with my hands at any point, and I placed it in the middle of the moist paper towel. I then moistened another paper towel with the water from the shot glass and place it on top of the seed, careful to make sure that seed was in contact with the paper towel all around. I put Saran Wrap over the plate, placed another plate upside down over the first plate, and placed the plate in a warm dark location. I checked on the seed every several hours, and had to re-moisten the paper towel twice. After 24 hours I noticed that the sprout had started to emerge from the seed, and after 36 hours it had emerged far enough that I was comfortable with planting it (the sprout was about 1/8" to 1/4" long).

Planting
My potting soil consisted of Fox Farms Ocean Forest, mixed with about 8-12 ounces of Black Gold Perlite. I placed some thin paper in the bottom of the pot to prevent the dirt from coming out, while still allowing excess water to drain from the holes in the pot if need be. I carefully removed the seed from the paper towels using tweezers, and placed it about 1/4" below the surface of the soil in a 2-gallon plastic pot, with the sprout facing down. And finally I thoroughly but carefully watered the soil using tap water filtered through a Brita filter, with a PH balance of between 6.2 and 6.5 (I used a PH kit I purchased from a local Hydro shop to test and balance the PH).

Growing
Hurry up and wait, that's the name of the game. 36 hours after planting the germinated seed I saw the first glimpse of the seedling starting to push through the soil, and I don't mind saying I was very excited! I carefully brushed away the little bit of soil on top of the seedling to help it along (I know I probably shouldn't have, but I couldn't help myself ;-)). Over the next several hours I checked back on the seedling about once every hour or two and monitored the progress. By the end of the day the little seedling was standing upright with the Cotyledon fully open and soaking up the rays, and I could see the first signs of the tiny little first "true" leaves!

That brings us up to date! Total elapsed time so far since I placed the first seed into a shot glass to soak it has been just 4 days. My other 4 Easy Ryder seeds are germinating in a paper towel right now. 3 of them will be joining their sister in the grow box, while one will be potted and will begin its life outside. It will be interesting to do a side by side comparison growing one of them outdoors and the others indoors. Aside from that I'm going to treat them exactly the same, so the only real difference will be the lighting and humidity, and possibly the water if we get any rain. I plan to post pictures of all plants regularly throughout the growing process. Feel free to follow my progress and comment if you have something you want to contribute!

What are you going to do about flowering your plant and the 12 dark hours, cause your box doesnt have a top.

Looks good so far though, good luck.

Easy Ryders are an AUTO FLOWER strain, they're not Photo-period. They go straight from seedling to flowering with virtually no Veg, are very short (16"-20" max usually), harvest in 8-9 weeks from seed, and the lighting schedule is 20/4 from sprout to harvest with NO change in light schedule for flowering (although you do change the bulbs from 6500K to 2700K when flowering begins, or a mix of the two). The fact that they only need 4 hours of darkness answers your second question. There are no lights on in my office at night, and the timer cuts the CFL lights from 1AM to 5AM every day while I'm asleep.

60 hours in the soil (24 hours after sprouting). Looking good so far... The other 4 Easy Ryder seeds are germinating and I expect they'll be ready to plant by tomorrow 8-22-10.

Not sure what you mean by "security", the grow is completely legal... I live in California and have a Medical Marijuana card. And trust me, even if some psychic did know I have a few plants underneath a desk, in my office, inside of my master bedroom upstairs, that's the last thing they'd break into my house for lol. I'm far more concerned with keeping the temps in the box down, and putting a top on it would trap the heat and dramatically increase the temps seeing as how heat rises. Even with my home AC set to 76 and a strong fan circulating and venting air from the box, it's a struggle to keep the temps at the soil below 85. Not to mention my lights hang down into the box from hooks underneath the desk... Anyway, thanks for the advice, but the top will be staying off.

Well my other 4 Easy Ryder seeds finished germinating today, and into the soil they went after naming each of them, 3 of them joined their sibling in the grow box which is now full, and the last one is beside the grow box soaking up CFL rays until a seedling pops through, then it's going outside to live out its life. I'm hoping to see the first signs of green sometime tomorrow and I think that's pretty realistic.

My first Easy Ryder, "Sarah", is coming along great. Here are pics of her on day 3 above soil.

Planted my remaining 4 Easy Ryders on 8-22-10, about 36 hours ago, and 2 of them are now visible when I brush away a tiny bit of soil. One still has the seed covering the Cotyledon it so it might take a little more work than the other one, but it had a long sprout when I planted it so it should be in good shape. The 3rd ER isn't visible yet, and the 4th one I actually didn't plant until about 24 hours ago, so I'm not expecting to see anything for another 12-24 hours. By this time tomorrow I'm hoping all 5 ERs should be clearly visible above ground and starting to soak up some rays :) (knock on wood). If I get 5 out of 5 to germinate and start growing on my first attempt I'll be ecstatic!

Today was day 4 above ground for "Sarah", my first Easy Ryder, and she's looking great! Below are today's pics.

Awesome, it'll be great to have another simultaneous grow to compare mine against. I also found someone else over in the "Autoflower Thread & Resource Guide" thread who's got 3 ERs growing that were planted within a day of mine, so if you guys both take pics often we should really have some good comparisons. When they're done and harvested, we can compare the yields and our growing methods to see how much of a difference it made. Good luck with your grow!

Ok, today was day 1 above soil for 3 of the 4 Easy Ryders I planted on 8-22-10 (I'll explain what happened to #5 below). Unfortunately I just couldn't resist the urge to check on their progress yesterday before they cracked the surface, and I'm paying the price. By prematurely moving the soil and exposing them to light, they weren't quite ready to start growing so they don't look as good as Sarah did on day 1 above ground. I think by tomorrow night they'll look a lot better, but they're definitely going to survive the seedling stage and grow.

I really screwed up with my 5th Easy Ryder, even worse than I did with the others that I rushed along. I somehow forgot to water her after I planted the germinated seed :wall:. Between the lack of water, and having a CFL with a reflective base about 2 inches above the surface for 36 hours, the soil completely dried out and I couldn't possibly imagine that the germinated seed could have survived. When I brushed away some of the soil, sure that I was going to find a dried up dead seedling, I was absolutely amazed to find that the seedling apparently hasn't died and had actually grown a little. I thoroughly watered it and put it back under the light, and with a lot of luck I'll see my 5th and final seedling break the surface sometime tomorrow. At this point though I'm not getting my hopes up too high.

Today was day 5 above ground for "Sarah", and she couldn't be doing better. So far I think I've done everything right with her, and she seems to growing perfectly!

@Redlighter

Thanks. The girls are just infants but I'm 5 for 5 from seed to seedling, and that's more than I ever expected with my brown thumb lol. Almost blew it a couple times, forgetting to put Saran Wrap over the paper towels which allowed them to completely dry out while germinating 4 of my seeds, not to mention forgetting to water one of my ERs after I planted 4 of them in soil. Still amazed that one survived 36 hours with no water and dry soil immediately after planting.

I'll definitely keep an eye on your journal over at GC. Good luck with the grow!

I took pics yesterday but I crashed before I got around to doing my daily journal post, so I'm just gonna skip over yesterday's pics and go straight today's.

All of my ERs have broken ground and are at least 2 days above soil. Some are looking better than others because I screwed around with them and uncovered some of the soil, trying to see if the seeds were in fact sprouting. There's no question now though that all 5 of my ER fem seeds are going to make it through the seedling stage and hopefully go on to become beautiful young ladies so to speak.

Sarah, my "first born", continues to grow perfectly. It's been one week above soil and thus far I haven't used any nutes, additives, or anything except water and FFOF soil (and some additional Black Gold Perlite). She has 3 sets of true leaves, and I'll probably see the first sign of the 4th set tomorrow.

I've also started germinating an Auto - Onyx (fem) freebie that I received with my order of ER seeds from Attitude. I plan to grow it outside along with one of my five ER plants. I'm right at the edge of the season for the ERs though I should be fine, but I'm probably a little bit late for the Onyx. Still, I'm in So-Cal so the temps won't be an issue, only the limited light by the time we're into Novemeber. I expect that the yield won't be optimal for the Onyx, but it should still be pretty decent. If it doesn't get too big I might just movie it indoors for the last couple weeks of flowering, we'll see.

Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention that I doubled the CFLs that I was using today. I did have a single 6500K, 23W/1600 Lumen bulb in an 8" reflective base directly over each pot, about 2 inches from the plant. They were certainly doing the job, but I decided to give some extra light to my seedlings that were a little behind the curve, and I could immediately see their leaves tilt up and point straight toward the light, rather than just growing flat. I decided to put Y adapters in all 4 of my 8" reflective bases, so now each plant has 2-23w, 1600 Lumen bulbs (3200 total) directly above it. The reflective bases focus nearly 100% of the light directly into the pot and on to the plant, so they're really getting drenched in light. All told, I have over 13,000 Lumens in a 1.5 SF box, and there's no question at all that the plants are loving the extra lumens. Unfortunately my temps are skyrocketing, and I'm going to have to add a second fan. I was keeping the temps right at about 85 degrees with 4 lights in there, but when I doubled the CFLs the temps shot up to the high 90s, even over 100 degrees according to a probe. I'm going to order a 2nd cabinet fan tomorrow to mount in the box.

And without further adieu, here are the new pics:

Cool, our grows will be almost in sync except for the one that I started 10 days ago. 36 hours is just about how long mine took to break soil once I planted the germinated seeds. Keep a journal or start a thread with pics if you can, it's helpful and fun to compare simultaneous grows of the same plants, especially for newbie growers. I'm going to continue doing daily updates with pics for at least the first 2-3 weeks, until they reach the point where you can't really see any difference from one day to the next, then I'll do it twice a week probably. Good luck with your grow!

Daily update time, although technically I'm counting this as 2 days since it's been 36 hours since I took my last pics and made a journal entry. Not much to report... All 5 Easy Ryders are doing very well, and Sarah's looking great. I'm really glad I planted one Easy Ryder about a week before the others, it gives me a benchmark so I know what to expect from my other plants by a certain day. That isn't why I did it, I did it so if I made any mistakes with my first plant I could learn from it and adjust with the plants that are a week behind, but it's turned out to be helpful.

My Onyx finished germinating today and went into the soil :), it'll be the last plant that I grow this time around. I plan to grow it outside with one of my Easy Ryders in a Planthouse 3 mini-greenhouse even though it's late in the year, but if it doesn't do well I may just move it inside. Because of the size though I'm really hoping I don't have to do that. And with that said, here are the latest pics of my girls:

Hey man. Great detail on your journal. I'll be about 3 weeks behind you with a very similar grow. What nutes do you plan on implementing and what schedule? Thx

Sorry for the delay, I've been taking a lot of pics every day and keeping them all organized, but I haven't gotten around to updating my journal and this thread. Gonna take care of that right now.

As far as nutes go, everybody's been saying that less is definitely more with Easy Ryders, and with this being my first grow I'm being VERY conservative about ANYTHING I add beyond just the FFOF soil which is full of nutes. For the first week or so I've done nothing other than giving them properly PH balanced water (using one of those little kits with drops for testing/adjusting). At about a week I talked to the guys at one of the local hydro shops, and they highly recommended an enzyme product called Hydrozome, which they insisted was the one product above all others in their store that they swore by if you didn't use ANYTHING else at all on your plants. They also highly recommended a silicon product for strengthening and protecting the roots (cheap), and I went with the Dyna-Grow brand product called Pro-Tekt, which again they recommended for being basically identical in content to all the big names, but at a much lower cost.

As far as "nutes" go I'm not doing anything at all yet, but when they start to flower in the next week or so I'm going to use the Dyna-Grow Liquid Bloom, and I don't really plan to use anything else at all except maybe Molasses. I don't care of I don't maximize their potential, I'd rather play it safe and not screw something up then to spend a lot of money trying to get a few extra grams, and possibly ruin the plants in my ignorance. Everybody has an opinion about a product or brand that they swear by, and you can't listen to or please everybody, so for now this is the game plan and so far they're doing great.

Wow, it's been a whole week since I've updated this thread and my journal, so here goes. Not much to report other than my plants are all doing GREAT.

Having a really hard time managing heat, even with my house AC set to 77, and 2 4" fans mounted in my grow box (one around 78CFM, one around 36 I think). I removed 2 bulbs from the box because with 2 bulbs dedicated to each plant the temps were climbing to the high 90s, even 100 (using a probe to measure temps right AT the soil level, not just ambient temperature inside the box). I can't use any stronger fans blowing inward or they blow too hard on the plants, stressing them out, and flipping either of them around to use for exhaust did almost nothing at all to reduce the heat. The top of the box is wide open so heat can exit through the top, and I've been leaving the entire front of the box open too to help reduce temps as well. The heat seems to want to stay right down at the level of the plants.

Anyway, with 6 bulbs in the box currently, putting out almost 10,000 Lumens for a 1.5 SF box, temps are between 85-90 depending on which plant I measure. Obviously that's still too high, but I really can't afford to lose anymore lumens, and I don't really want to have a big fan sitting outside my box blowing on it. I'll keep working on it, but I think it'll get better when the plants get a little taller and I can raise the bulbs up, instead of all of them all being just a couple inches above the pots, with a big reflector over each one focusing all the lumens (and the heat) on the plants.

Ok, here are the next day's pics, picking up where I left off from my last set of pictures about a week ago. I'll create a new msg for each successive day's pics.
