idk.. i think it sounds kinda lame personally.. only med patients are allowed to try out the strains, all of which must be purchased through a dispensary... whatever happened to just wanting to get high? and on top of that, i have heard that there is not even gonna be any actual pot smoking at the cup.. wtf is that... i don't have anything against med patients, far from it, but why can't mj just be legalized and let everyone who wants to smoke it... why do i have to pretend i have glaucoma or whatever to get a card.. i've never heard of medical alcohol and thats legal for people who just want to get drunk from right..

IDK...local dispensaries have been running an SF cannabis cup for atleast 3 years. I have been to the last two as a competitor and am leery of hightimes involvement in it....

I will find out some more info before I form a solid opinion, however.

**EDIT

From the FAQ

How can my California-based medical cannabis dispensary compete in the Medical Cannabis Cup?
Entry into the medical cannabis cup is limited to legally operating, licensed medical cannabis cup dispensaries in the state of California. For more information on entering an indica, a sativa, cannabis concentrates or medical-cannabis infused edibles, please contact us directly at (212) 387-0500 or by email [email protected]

I am officially against this because they are only allowing entries from dispensaries. Seems to me like a giant media event for no other purpose than to advert the dispensaries that advert in hightimes. I cant think of any legal reason they can't accept entries from non public collectives as well as patients.

So, it begs the question...why arent they?

Yeah this does seem like a media event for cameras and crowds...Most of the time the bud isn't even grown by the dispensary, they often act as a middle man...I mean c'mon you can grow 80 different kinds of bud yourself.

Another thing confuses me about the posting above. It says the Cannabis Cup is "limited to legally operating, licensed medical cannabis cup dispensaries". What does that mean??? This whole things stinks of a PR stunt...We shall have to see...

what the fuck is wrong with you guys???

if you didn't know marijuana is still illegal in the US, and for a magazine to attempt to promote a contest celebrating it is very risky and ground-breaking.

as immensely popular and commercialized as high times might seem to you guys, most of the people I know that don't smoke weed don't know what high times is.

if the magazine were to promote unlicensed sales of marijuana (selling shit requires a permit, for sales-tax collections reasons), they could be implicated in a federal case under the racketeering act, and high times, all the growers, all the collectives, and everybody in between would go down in one HUGE BUST.

it's not PR, it's committing to the phrase: If I'm gonna do something, better do it right.

Stood 2 Hours in line for a big disappointment. First off dont register med patience at the door. Ticket sells should have been outside, food sells should have away from the main entrance. I would say good amount of vendors. Should of had a ATM on site. Vendors would have maid allot more money.

haha yeah

I cut in line right at the entrance gate.....well I was up there asking questions and then the bouncer said "who prepaid" so I joined the group going in....I would NOT have waited in the long ass line that went out the door both ways and up two freeway exits to the point the CHP was pissed off.

I sold my wristband when i left for $10 ( nobody would buy it )

Overall it wasn't a bad event, once you got in. There were all those "flyer pimps" "crowd hustlers" type people, bothering you in line with flyers, that was kind of shitty.

I bought some amazing Cheese from the booth next to Cali Connection and I got some super bomb sour d from an slightly eastern lookin dude, in medicine bottles.

Was subcool there? I stopped by the TGA booth, was super ripped was just like "Hey!! I have a chernobyl growin" they're like "cooool" and then this guy with a bong gave me some hits of Vortex and that is a good weed.

There was a hash bar with another eastern lookin dude, they are based in SF, but he was givin out OG kush earwax hits hotkinfed into a glass piece....SOOOO BOMB!!!!

High Times really borked this one up. They had to turn away everyone who didn't presale on Saturday by like 1pm. Oh well, they were overwhelmed I guess. Venue was too small. Staff was nice.

I got a free shirt tho! and Grindtainer! Really cool! I was so ripped and overwhelmed, I only took one picture and its of the line outside heh.

ATM ON SITE! Yeah! I would have bought more stuff haha So much cash.......i doubt they reported all/any of the income haha genius
