Firefox plugins you need to know about.

AdblockPlus http://adblockplus.org/en/
A cookie (the kind you eat not the kind that tracks you) for the person who figures out that AdblockPlus blocks ads on web pages. You subscribe to a list of advertising addresses. AdblockPlus then blocks those requests. You can also add rules to block ads or other unwanted elements that are not part of the list(s) you subscribe to.

Better Privacy http://netticat.ath.cx/BetterPrivacy/BetterPrivacy.htm
Local Shared Objects (aka LSO or flash cookies) are a lesser known threat to user privacy then cookies. They are stored indefinitely and can be used to track your movements on a website. If your computer is sized they can be used to identify what websites you have visited. Better Privacy allows you to easily view and remove these files. It can also clear them when you close or start the browser.

Ghostry http://www.ghostery.com/
Ghostry can detect and block many different attempts to profile your online behavior. From their website "Ghostery sees the invisible web - tags, web bugs, pixels and beacons. Ghostery tracks the trackers and gives you a roll-call of the ad networks, behavioral data providers, web publishers, and other companies interested in your activity."

No Script http://noscript.net/
Basically No Script is one of the best plugins that you can have, and a must for anyone who wants to be safe while browsing. From their website “The NoScript Firefox extension provides extra protection for Firefox, Seamonkey and other mozilla-based browsers: this free, open source add-on allows JavaScript, Java and Flash and other plugins to be executed only by trusted web sites of your choice (e.g. your online bank), and provides the most powerful Anti-XSS protection available in a browser. ”

Beef Taco http://jmhobbs.github.com/beef-taco/
This plugin adds generic cookies that can't be changed to help prevent ad companies from tracking your browsing habits. It won't block ads but it will prevent targeted advertising. Good thing to have.

Form History Control http://www.formhistory.blogspot.com/
Gives you a lot of control over browser history without having to delete the entire history. It can be useful in certain situations where you want casual observers to see the traces you expect to see on a computer but still need to delete, add, or modify entries.

Yeah man cool thanks for this. Another thing on history if you got people who get online on your computer is go to new window then go to inprivate browsing then you can type in whatever and the history will be nowhere to be found

Wow, think of all the porn out there sitting on people's hard drives. And to think, I bought a used laptop too. I hope the previous owner was a good boy. Yep, I sure do. I never go onto those sites. Nope.

You forgot to mention Tor.

https://www.torproject.org/
Along those lines I should mention the tor button addon. It provides additional protections to keep you from revealing your ip while using it. It also works for i2p. https://www.torproject.org/torbutton/

Tor offers a firefox browser bundle and a bundle for instant messaging (well as soon as a bug gets patched in pidgin they'll be offering an IM bundle again). https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html.en

Also The Amnesic Incognito Live System (TAILS) is a liveCD that routs all communications through tor and leaves no trace of it's use on the hard drive by running in RAM. https://tails.boum.org/about/index.en.html

I just hijacked my own thread. Does that mean I get a complimentary gold plated Kalashnikov?

You think the porn is impressive? Even ignoring that most users don't securely delete files, between saved emails, stored passwords, quicken book files, and other goodies you can harvest enough personal and finical data from lots of used hard drives to scare you. Remember to securely wipe your hard drive before selling it. Small businesses are notorious for not doing this and that can put their customers at risk.
