Feeding and Low Stress Training (Hydroponics)

Hello everyone,

After several years growing the old fashioned way (no topping, no fimming, no LST, no nothing) I have decided to venture forth in Low Stress Training. I have already started bending her down and tying her up; seemed a bit wrong at the time but now I'm getting used to it after seeing her lift her head up after just a couple of hours, seeing that she's ok makes me feel a bit more at ease. In any case after following the same regimen for a couple of weeks of vegetation I have noticed something odd about feeding when training. Before I would feed during the night when in vegetative mode and in the day when flowering; for me that has been the most effective way seeing as she drinks more during the night during veg but more during the day during flowering. Now that I have been training her daily she has changed the way she intakes her nutrients. Mind you I have ran the same strain with and without LST.

What is happening now is that right after I train her the uptake of nutrients decreases by about 50% for approx 12 hours after that she starts to consume the same way again or even more at times. I can verify this daily; every time I train her which is early in the morning right after she wakes up she slows down nutrient uptake for 12 hours; her ppms even go up by 1/3 for those 12 hours but quickly go down to it's base reservoir or even less since it's using more than before the training. For example: Let's say that I have changed the reservoir and added nutrient solution of 500 ppm right before the training. Soon after the training the ppm start rising, even as high as 600 for example. After 12 hours I check the ppm again and they are almost back to 500, a couple of hours later and she's already at 450ppm meaning she's bounced back from the training and is consuming nutrients.

What I have concluded so far is that when training one has to be first very aware of your ppm and where your plant is at that stage in her life; second to add a bit extra of Micro (N) to your feed if your into heavy training and also to feed below your estimated nutrient ceiling as to not cause nutrient burn when she's recovering. I would very much like to hear everyone's input if possible. If there are any other more experienced growers out there with more experience in LST please share your thoughts about feeding and LST so that we may all benefit from the knowledge.

Thank you for your time RIU,

AWnox

Hey man I did LST on my last grow and I would not go down the same route again unless I really had to for height reasons. Mine just ended up growing a ridiculous amount popcorn buds which in my opinion took away from the size of the main buds. The main buds and main kola just got to a certain size and then popcorn buds just started popping up all over the branches I had going straight out from the main stem at 90 degree angles. While this was happning the main buds and main kola just stopped getting bigger so all in all I would recommend LST if you have issue's with space and want to control the height other than that I wouldn't recommend it. That's just my own personal opinion dude and best of luck with your grow dude hope it grows well.

I want to know more... please...
Why are you using the concentrations of 500ppm? Do you start with distilled water?
I honestly feed cuttings at closer to the concentrations you are describing, then my vegetative plants by the time mine are developing I tend to have my nutrients at much higher ratios (800+ though my water is relatively high in minerals to start with) and rarely see major fluctuation. (admittedly I haven't checked my TDS several times a day in a long while)

Thanks for the feedback IrishFarmer; I hear ya on the results. I figured that could happen so I am definitely taking it into consideration. I'll try to compensate by not going to deep into training, allowing maybe just a few main tops and let them branch out; limiting the amount of "bush" maybe would help concentrate results? In any case it's also experimental, never done it before so figured I should try at some point and learn you know.

Currently she's at day 18 (from seed) @ 350ppm pH 6.5; I use distilled water all throughout the grow always from seed. Last grow I took her up to 1300 for a week then down to 1100 for another then flush for the last 2; never LST with her though. With this one I have and the ppm rise severely after training for a few hours then rapidly decline once she adapts again. Would be interesting to do a side by side grow of and LST and a non one to compare feeding habits specifically.

you say your own personal opinion... which are based on your own poor results. and i'd say thats poor advice. topping and lst can get you incredible results if done properly.

just my own personal opinion ;-)

I agree to a good extent, not many people fully appreciate how much they can manipulate their plants. I tend to grow several different strains together and a big part of my tool kit is topping/trimming... tall lanky plants are topped, short stalky plants are Popsicle trimmed (to allow for the best light distribution overall (also decent bud size)..

Why? overall... what is your thought process? where did you obtain it? this is not meant to be taken as criticism (its not) just feeling things out...

Well in all honesty it's just for shits and giggles if you will. I tend to always grow the old fashioned way, no special gimmicks just good genetics and patience but this time I got a "itch" to try this LST thing out, maybe next time I'll top her too and see how it goes. I figured it can't hurt to try; my wife says why mess with something that already works? so I answer; well imagine if we stopped with the Ford T1 would we still be driving that piece of shit today? Things can and should be perfected as much as possible for optimal results there's no discussing that. I've heard a lot of people with contradictory statements about LST and such techniques so it's good to also find out for yourself you know and get a handle on the discussion; literally.

I like the way you think, and I love how you collect data (you keep records better than me)... keep it coming, I look forward to hearing more results :)
Congrats on the 200... and thanks for taking the time to explain things for me...

if you're interested in massively increasing you're yield and getting quality buds across the board.. i'd recommend studying up on topping and LST.

i dont grow anymore but when i used to.. id top, lst and lollipop. all to produce an even canopy and end up with something almost like a SOG but from just one plant.

Thanks for the words Guile, I'll be sure to post any developments here so that we may all benefit from the info. :)

heres a thread that will show you numerous possibilities with LST and also some good techniques. its all good stuff :bigjoint:

Thanks for the link Markybuds, great thread in deed, hadn't see that one before for some reason. I have been trying to read from all over the web about LST; specially auxin redistribution. I'm very curious to know how they react in more detail, for example if the newly appointed "main shoot" is tied down again will the auxin hormone redistribute to the next highest top? Also would the auxin hormone be distributed evenly if all tops were on the same level or would one be designated the "main" top?

Great thread man, taking a look at how other people managed gives you a lot more idea on how it should be done properly. Thanks again bro.

Hey question to anyone who can answer... Could you trim or prune one or a few of the fan leafs when performing LST at a early stage? I have some shoots/tops that are being covered by one of the main stalks fan leafs, would it be ok to take this one leaf off? I'm thinking that since the main stalk is almost completely horizontal she doesn't need that fan leaf and only the fan leafs of the new branches /tops matter? Please if anyone has any input please share. Thanks for your time guys.

I would like to keep this thread going as I will be lst my next hydro grow. Going for it, looks like a great way to increase yeild. Anyone else do this in hydro?

im currently doing LST in hydro, someone gave me Northern Lights Auto and since i can't top or fim auto's i tried for the 1st time LST and i have to admit... Not bad at all... im actually surprised on how fast and practical it is not to mention that my plants have exploded in size

I would also like to know if its ok to take some fan leaves off (3 weeks vegging + LST)
