The NCI (National Cancer Institute) has just publicly declared that cannabis has medical benefits. This could lead to the rescheduling of cannabis on the federal level!

General Information
Cannabis, also known as marijuana, originated in Central Asia but is grown worldwide today. In the United States, it is a controlled substance and is classified as a Schedule I agent (a drug with increased potential for abuse and no known medical use). The Cannabis plant produces a resin containing psychoactive compounds called cannabinoids. The highest concentration of cannabinoids is found in the female flowers of the plant.[1] As a botanical, Cannabis is difficult to study because of the lack of standardization of the botanical product due to the many climates and environments in which it is grown. Clinical trials conducted on medicinal Cannabis are limited.

The potential benefits of medicinal Cannabis for people living with cancer include antiemetic effects, appetite stimulation, pain relief, and improved sleep. In the practice of integrative oncology, the health care provider may recommend medicinal Cannabis not only for symptom management but also for its possible direct antitumor effect.

Cannabinoids are a group of terpenophenolic compounds found in Cannabis species (Cannabis sativa L. and Cannabis indica Lam.). This summary will review the role of Cannabis and the cannabinoids in the treatment of people with cancer and disease-related or treatment-related side effects.
This could be big news!

On a side note, I found this statement particularly hilarious.

Are they really claiming that they can't study medical cannabis because it's too easy to grow? lol

Funny how the Federal Government denies Medical marijuana but holds a 20 yr. U.S. Patent until 2021 on marijuana

The U.S. Patent Office issued patent #6630507 http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/6630507.html to the United States Dept of Health and Human Services filed on 2/2/2001.

The patent lists the use of certain cannabinoids found within the cannabis sativa plant as useful in certain neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and HIV dementia.

Since cannabis sativa (or marijuana as we like to refer to it) contains compounds recognized and endorsed by an agency of the U.S. Government why is it that marijuana remains on the Federal Schedule One list of drugs?

The issuance of patent #6630507 is a direct contradiction of the Governments own definition for classification of a Schedule 1 drug.

I guess the bigger question may be why hasn't Norml or some other legal entity sued the Feds to have marijuana removed from the Schedule 1 list based on this patent granted?

They cant regulate it...they cant control it....thats why its illegal.....but they make sure they have a patent on it....

Pretty good news, definitely a step in the right direction. It seems that, albeit gradually, people are becoming more acceptive of marijuana. Hopefully I'll live to see it's legality, but I can only wish.

Hate to rain on your parade but the government admitted medical benefits of weed as early as the 70s and actually have granted 13 dea exemptions and send these people free weed every 25 days. Check out the documentaries waiting to inhale and in pot we trust. The government has been 'on the verge of legalization or decriminalization' since the 70s. The problem is that there is overwhelming support among the citizens but none among lobbyists corporate fat cats and politicians. Big pharma would rather legalize meth than weed and the fed is scared shitless of what they're going to do when the 100s of millions of dollars in dea and law enforcement funding from busts suddenly dries up. Everyone argues that taxing marijuana will fill that financial void buteveryone wants thattax money to go to health care and education which will put thousands of law enforcement officers across the country out of jobs and cause a huge drop off in new recruitment due to lack of funding for new officers which in turn leads to increased police corruption from having the same men on the force for significantly longer than before.

Yeah and that's just the repercussions I can think of off the top of my head and I'm fuckin high.

NORML has a bar chart showing the raising "for it" and lowering "against it". Hopefully it won't be much longer!

yeah, it's complicated. Pharma wants the patents on the chemicals produced out of canna so they can profit and don't forget GMO's. At the same time keeping the weed patented, just like Monsanto and Conagra have done with corn, wheat and soybeans. This is goin to end up being a nightmare. Seed Banks will come under fire for selling seeds collected from patented plants and find themselves fighting a battle in in the courtrooms against those giants and so on.........
S.O.S.(save our seeds)

the main reason pot won't be legal for a Long long long time is that its a back-burner issue. We've got wars, unemployment, unrest in the middle east, homeless, hungry, a fucked up education and social security system, "global warming", the spread of weaponized nuclear technology, terrorism, aviation issues in the news, and so on and so on.

Not to mention we still have a bunch of stubborn old fucks in office and once the old farts retire and the new generation takes over it'll get done.

(oh and dont forget the fact that every doctor lawyer and grower involved in the medical marijuana industry is fighting legalization tooth and nail because they cant profit on it if its legal.)

too true

I say follow the money
A Chapman University scientist reveals in two recent studies that nausea-reducing chemicals in marijuana can be separated from the chemicals that produce euphoria.“The target for us is to conduct careful and well-controlled experiments in humans, which will take some time,” Yang said. But the goal of her research group is to neutralize marijuana’s troublesome psychoactive effects while taking advantage of its potential medical benefits.
“That’s what we’re hoping for,” says Keun-Hang Susan Yang

Who is the breeder developing this new strain. Is it a GMO?

I am all for it, it has the potential to help alot of people and generate revenue.

However, what are the consequences?

Most people who use marijuana do so for recreation, to unwind, de-stress, to get creative, to get busy, to have fun and enjoy God's creation.
There are many, many people who use it medicinally, the side effects for some are unpleasant. That being said, will marijuana offered now in medical marijuana states come off the shelves and be replaced with the "No High" strain?

Will this "No High" strain be a genuine hybrid or a GMO?

In a world where people voluntarily do meth and heroin nothing surprises me any more.
or worse. I'm sorry, I think I've caused this thread to take a downturn.
Reality my friend,
Besides the cold, hard dirty, truth outside. At lease you know that there are many more people who are out there trying to make the wrongs right. Even if it's only within themselves.
Truth is light.
