my fan makes more noise when i turn it down.

whan i set my primair to its lowest setting setting ( fan idle speed ) i get

like a humming noise, yet its quiet ( ish ) on full throttle. dos anyone no of

a way around it, im prepared to take an electric shock over this.

thanks in advance :blsmoke:

is it the actual fan? or the air whooshing from the fan?

you can wrap the fan in some type of insulationg like fatmat or dynamat sound dampening material.

i would suggest you also use insulated ducting

the hum is definately coming from the fan ( RUCK 125 ), i found that if i keep on 50 percent idle it stops. problem is that when the cold weather gets here it will bring my temps down to much.

gone have to build some sort of box to place over with sound dampning, can run it at half power for now, the box can be a little project between now and winter.

thankyou Loud blunts ( is there anything u dont know ) you are a regular cannabis guru. plus rep

The noise you are hearing is from the fan motor, its there because you have x amount of current coming into the fan, and when on low speed, its having to hold back the current so it can run slower thus creating the hum you hear. This is usually most common when you install a light dimmer for a fan.

would a primair have the same components as a dimmer fan, im not great on the electrics but i can get by. is there any procedure to rectify the problem???

many thanks

I think I know what fan your talking about, it doesnt have built in speed control does it? If not, how are you controlling it? If you have the fan Im thinking of its supposedly pretty quiet. You got a pic of this thing?

welcome to ac motor speed control!

*best* way is to use a freq drive and motor. but at $300 min its not an option.

buy sominex.

make sure the fan wheel is on there tight so it doesn't wobble. You could also try changing the position of the fan. when it's running and making noise pick it up and turn it different directions see if it stops. Sometimes having it in a different spot changes the weighting of the fan enough to stop the rattle.

I'm told using a variable transformer for fan speed control, i.e. a Variac, doesn't produce fan noise. It actually changes the voltage to the fan to control speed instead of using pulse width modulation. I'm only vaguely aware of how PWM speed controlling actually works but I've read its major downfall is commutator noise in the fan motor. The commutator is the part of the motor that reverses the current every revolution thus making the motor spin. They can vibrate when the motors coils are being continually switched on and off.

Whatever the case, I know my speed controller was worthless on my 6" EcoPlus. The buzz was awful. I had more success by running it full speed and reducing noise other ways. But if I buy another speed controller it will be variable transformer type, like this expect a smaller single outlet unit....

How much does that big red shiny thing cost?

I've got an old ass fan that runs pretty quite. I got myself a 4 dollar fan controller/dimmer switch today. Gonna wire it up tomorrow and see how see does.

i think an soundproof box is the answer here, its worth the noise for what primair does ( temperature has never been above 25 ).

i would post pictures BUT.... i havent got a camera and the pc im using was made for

me by brother out of spare parts. i forget that a lot of you are from U.S.A because

some of the equipment shown i have never seen in my life.

we operate at 240 and i think US is 110v. yet we all speak english , mad world.
