Fan noise

I spent all this money for a 4-pot 400w HPS grow system.
Nicely fitted into a 1x1x2m tent only to find out my fan was to loud.
Currently doing an outdoor grow but very keen to start my hydro grow.

So I'm thinking about building a 1.2x1.2x2m grow box out of chipboard.
The chipboard will be approximately 10-15mm thick.
The fan is just a standard 6inch inline fan w/500mm carbon filter.
Do you think the chipboard will reduce fan noise?
I'm also looking into that insulated ducting.

Really need your advice RollItUp.
Will be muchly appreciated.

just get a fan controller.. i got an 8inch 735 cfm and it makes a little noise with the controller but without it i couldnt take it

A fan controller or a smaller fan since thats all a fan controller does.

The OP on that thread would have gotten even more damping by moving the box totally away from touching that wall. Otherwise the idea is "sound". Also most fan motors have 2 RPM bands where they are happiest and vibrate less. Variable speed motors or controls let you slowly increase or decrease the speed until you find the high RPM and low RPM ranges the little thing is happiest in. If 2 fans in line you have work as part of the vibration is the waves of air moving down the vent. It is not in a straight line as it is not a pressurized system but more of a passive with a boost. The wave itself has a damping effect and often not one we want.

i got a fan silencer along with a speed controller and it works very well

Go with insulated ducting, it acts like a muffler for the fan and doesn't cost much if you pick it up at a home improvement store. I replaced all of my regular ducting and it made a huge difference for my (3) 6" fans. Now I hear the air pump and dehumidifier more than the fans.
