Is equal rights the same as equal pay?

I was on Facebook the other day and came across this post:

US Uncut
Costco proves that companies can thrive by paying workers a living wage.‪#‎walmarteconomy‬

For me there is a huge difference between equal rights and equal pay... They are not the same thing. With the fast food strike, the Walmart workers strike, this strike, that strike... "We want fair wages!!!" etc. I just do not agree at all with it. My first job was at Taco Bell within 3 months I became shift lead and at 6 months I was the night manager. I made $7.25/ hour for a pretty stressful job for a 17 year old.

Later that year I quit working there and got job at the Laundry Mat making $7.50/ hour. After that I got a job at a health food store making $8.50/ hour. Again quit that job and started working for Lowes making $9.00/ hour. I stayed there for a little while and got moved up to Team Manager and was now making $11/ hour. My point being is I kept striving for more. I didn't wait around for an opportunity to present itself. I got out there and looked. One of the things I had going for me is that I had a job while I looked for a better paying one.

Later on I started working for a time share company and got a crash course in sales. Started making good money considering I was only 19 and getting $20/ hour (This is approximate sometimes more sometimes way less... It was commission based and a bad week is a bad week). This was in Las Vegas and trust me when I say, "selling time shares is not easy."

Now I am partial owner of a different company, still doing sells and have added CAD Designer to the resume as well (Thanks to YouTube and some classes I took while in high school). I did not grow up rich. My parents were able to provide my brother and I with the essentials plus give us $15/ week for lunch. We weren't poor but a typical middle class family of 4 with 3 dogs.

The point being, I didn't get anything handed to me. Did I receive help and support along the way? You betcha. But everything I wanted I paid for myself i.e. car, guitar, amps, etc. That's why I started working. When I wanted to make more money or increase my wages, I went up to my supervisor and said "What do I need to do, to get to the next level." If the employer was unable to provide a way of making more or placed a cap on my income, that is when I started looking for other jobs. Although, 8 out of 10 times when the employer was asked how to move up they would give me a list of steps. A couple of times I received a raise on the spot :). Now being in sells there is no cap for how much income I can bring in. The better the company does the better I do, so it is a win-win situation.

This is the rant I went into:

If I were an employer and someone worked harder, went above and beyond their job description, was somewhat smart perhaps even educated and worked efficiently. They would get X amount and have room to grow into management.

On the flip side, someone that is lazy, does the bare minimum, just enough not to get fired and borderline smarter than a 5th grader. They would be paid Y and probably be on the list of "How do I get rid of this individual." <----Why on earth would they expect to get paid X?

All this about equality, etc. Has nothing to do with rights. They don't give a crap about rights what they want is equal pay for doing the same mindless job. If you want more money and a better job/ career, then you have to work harder, educate yourself and strive to be the best at everything you do. That is how to earn more money, not to complain about Walmart being unfair or how fast food restaurants are taking advantage of their employees...

Don't like how much money you are making... FIND A NEW JOB! Better yet start a business and Create more jobs. This is the digital age. Any and all information is at our finger tips. Use it for creation and innovation. not cats and memes.

End Rant.

It's funny you mention time share companies.

I spent most summers while I was in college being an OPC for several different companies in the Smokey Mountains.

General seedy nature of the industry aside, you can kill it there if you catch on. I made about $1200/week through the summer just hanging out outside of restaurants talking to people.

The income falls off to nothing as soon as summers over though.

Anyway, my buddies would get jobs at grocery stores or restaurants, and complain about only being able to earn two or three hundred dollars a week.

All the companies are in constant state of hiring all summer long, most people can't do the job, but you
don't know until you try.

Most people never take a risk. It takes a little bit of balls to ask for a raise or responsibility. Most don't gave the gumption.

why did someone get the promotion you wanted, chances are they asked for it!

Sales is great skill to learn. Very few things get from point a to b without a salesman.

If you can sale, you'll always have a job.

I like how in our society everyone thinks they can start their own business based off a bunch of loans and it will most likely fail.

You know you cant call yourself a CAD designer because of "Youtube and classes you took in High School".

Think how ridiculous this statement is "Im gonna add lawyer to my resume cos I watched Damages and have been to court a couple of times"

In our society we are able to start businesses and take risks. That is the point isn't it? Yes tons of businesses fail everyday. The point is try! Why is it acceptable to collect welfare, disability and whatever but you laugh and kick dirt at someone who opens a business and fails?

where did I say it's acceptable to collect welfare? we wouldn't of had the housing market crash if all those people would of been realistic about making money. most people have a short sighted mentality that they aren't gonna be made obsolete. is there really a difference between the welfare recipient and the person who defaults on a loan and goes with bankruptcy basically forcing a different institution eat there loss?

You are right, in regards to the housing. People defaulting on loans. I think ARMs really screwed people over though (well people not understanding what they were). Adjustable Rate Mortgage. Yeah I can afford a $1000/ month mortgage then 2 years later its $2500 then $3500, etc.

When you look at that way, yes it is the same thing. Over speculating a home value and filing bankruptcy is just as bad.

I think bankruptcy laws have changed since the crash and you still have to pay some of the money back or certain things will not qualify for it. Not sure though.

So what is our solution then? If you don't like how much money you are making, what do you do?

Demand that we increase minimum wage?
Start a Business, if you qualify for a loan?
Look for a better job?
Go to school, if you qualify for loans, etc?
Sell Drugs on the side?
Say Fuck it and try to qualify for as many programs as possible?
Get a second job?
Steal a car a sell it for parts?

I would LOVE to know what banks give out loans to start businesses. Can you tell me?
Sure thing, first let me ask you a couple questions:
What is you credit score?
What is your social security number?
Do you have any outstanding loans?
Are you behind on any credit cards?
How long have lived at your current address?
Do you have any collateral?
Is your business idea a good one?
What is your current annual income?

I'll repeat the last part of my statement again... If you qualify. So to answer your question any bank that you meet the minimum requirements for.

If you qualify.
To qualify, you will need the collateral to completely pay off the loan in the case of almost guaranteed failure. You will also need the backing of an entity like the SBA( Small Bus. Admin). Without those things you may as well play the California lottery because the lottery odds are better than procuring a bank loan to start a business.

50% of all new businesses fail in the first 3 years and 90% fail within the fist 10 years. Banks don't play those odds, they are in business to make a profit, not lose their shirt.

Friends, family and fools are where most money is procured to start most businesses, getting a loan from a bank to start a business is VERY difficult, even if you have perfect credit and a good income and collateral.

Just wanted to put that out there so people aren't discouraged after applying to 100 different banks and getting 100 refusals.

Costco may pay their employees a generous wage, the problem is they outsource a lot of their in store positions. Their sub contractors are not paid quite as well.
