I wont be getting a 200 watt cob anytime soon. They have no supporting items like reflectors, mounts ect. When those come out maybe.
 
Are his MW drivers genuine or like the crees he sells or knockoffs? I'm wondering if the electronics are the same not if MW will back them up. I'm assuming it's similar to his crees... Nothing wrong with that... Chinese communist party kept Thinkpad line running so they could all get Thinkpads...

I dont want to spray light all over. I want it focused on my plants. I am sure there is a lot of light going to the sides. I want to know almost exactly how much light is going to my plants. I dont want to guess how focused each chip is or is not.

Do these chips have mounts yet? If I spend the time building them they wont be put together with tape. I want a good solid connection that will last for years.

His drivers are MW. If there is an issue with them, he will take care of it for you even. He has treated customers here very well.

well 200W in one LED is not spraying all over. probably not... but thats nothing that thermal adhesive cant handle

Huh how is thermal paste going to stop light from going to the side?

If you put a 200 watt some where you will get light loss. It will light the walkways or be lost on the side of the grow area. Till that light can be focused I am not going to purchase the cob. If it has a large foot print I dont care because I can engineer a set up to over lap.

But more watts means more light to the sides. No way around it. Just a fact of using cobs.

And if the pattern looks like a HPS PPFD chart with a hot spot in the middle that is not very efficient. In other words I want a reflector to channel the light into a even pattern.

How big that pattern is does not matter as long as it is consistent from cob to cob.

Well you wouldnt run one thats for sure so no need to worry about having one light source. If you ran it at 50% and had one LED per every 2 sq/ft it might be profitable or even 3 or 4 in a 4x4 / 5x5 if there was a need... say that the price per COB was $50-60 it could be worth it.

Its going to mount the LED to a cooling surface... no drilling or anything.

All COBs have the same 120 degree FWHM angle. So a PAR reading from identical distances, or especially taking the average PPFD over a 7x7 grid like Malocan did, should be a way to compare -relative- performances between COBs.
agreed. my tests are different than malocans, i was just trying to generate relative scaling/costing data, which i did, and led me to make *my own conclusion* that citis were currently the best performance and value before i repped them. so it may look like i push citizen because i sell them, but the opposite is true, i sell them because (imo) they are the best.

in a perfect world wed do a quick and dirty test like mine on multiple samples from every different manufacturer (i have getian samples on the way in all sizes and colors), and from these quick and dirty tests we would do more testing. i could give a shit less about integrating sphere data, id rather have 10 good useful data sets for the cost of one "correct" one. But a good next step would be to do the real world tent test in multiple points like malocan did.

problem being repeatability. ive seen lots of these tests (not malocans necessarily) where you see a huge bias to one side of the tent because the fixture is a few degrees off axis. my test isnt perfect - but its damn repeatable. level cob mount, level sensor mount, fixed distance, on axis, carefully measured current. when 3000K 1825 beats 3590 CB by the same margin that 5000K 1825 beats 3590 DD there is an element of repeatability there though not strictly on the same samples. im not made of money and these tester chips will invariably end up in builds for me and my close buddies, so i cant just bust out 10 chips to generate repeatability data (esp. when those with access to the newer cree bins wont even do any level of testing (or make it public) remotely approaching my barely acceptable level of detail)

there is zero point in using a $10000 pulse current tester in a $250,000 integrating sphere to generate "perfect" data for 2 reasons:
1. al of these chips will be obsolete within 6 mos
2.all of these chips are going to be used in a huge variety of applications with a large matrix of variables more important than whether your chip is +/-3% in efficiency

Not sure if 200w cobs are the answer for us though. We already need to space them out @ 50w to get spread. Even if you drove them at 50%, 100w in one location seems like a bit much. Its great for premade fixtures but for custom rails, I do not see them being a huge deal unless priced VERY well (so you can run them 75w with hopefully a 70%+ efficiency).
you gotta remember that the market is stadium lighting, streetlighting, high bays, replacing large HIDs

larger cobs may or may not have a use for us

for example the ~384W max clu058-1825 is an excellent value and outpaces a CXB3590 across the board at efficiency/watt even at low currents, and is priced about the same

then there is the $60 500+ W clu05-3618 which beats both of the above across the board at a given wattage, but its high cost per chip makes it not the best value for an application not needing mega wattage.

in other words (similar to what smart cxb3070 users have known for some time)- three $40 1825s will put down more lumens than two $60 3618s at the same price... and offer better coverage

I'll be buying some, as long as the price point is on par. Don't you worry about that. Do some testing on and take lots of pictures of them when they arrive!
