Ed Rosenthal Say's CFL's May be Better than HPS for Micro Growing

Where in the hell am I?

OK. I think it's obvious to every1 as to what I have been choosing to grow w/on this grow;-) I am going to give my OPINION, which I base on the garts and chafts  that I've seen, based on witnessing (not over the internet where some ppl stretch the truth some :o), different articles, a few books, a basic electricity course (not impressive, I know, but I took it and passed w/100% nonetheless), and my own personal experience.
CFL's work great for growing:eyesmoke: There is NO disputing this fact. It takes quite a bit of CFL's to compare w/HID lighting. It takes @ least the same # of ACTUAL wattage used (NOT THE CFL EQUIVALENT TO ACTUAL LIGHT!!!) to compare. As far as Lumen's: In my case I have 460W of CFL's for my flower, these lights create a mere 32,000L of light. If I'm not mistaken (I know I will be corrected if I'm wrong:bigjoint:), doesnt a 400W HPS creat like over 50K Lumens? (I thought it was like 55K) Now, the reason I did this grow w/CFL's is because #1: Price of set up-For me this was THE main factor. I do not have much $ @ all! I was able to but EVERYTHING (minus the kids!), for under $100! I couldnt beat that. #2: Heat-Due to #1, I was unable to afford any type of decent temperature regulating system (already had a couple of fans :eyesmoke:) #3: Curiosity-I knew that I wanted to grow. I knew I would learn as I grow and that future grows will learn from this one;-)
Thats about it! My next grow I will veg w/Fluoro's and a few CFL's (after seeing how a majority of my girls vegged, I cant see not doin it!), and I will be flowering w/a 400W Air-cooled Hydrofarm hoodbongsmilie
I believe that FOR ME, this will be the most efficient and cost effective way for me to grow until I am able to flower more than 8-10 girls @ a time. Oh, my next grow will also be a stealth cabinet set up. I will have a DIY on how to build watever I do myself, as well as a complete step by step (w/pics), of all design and fab!

See that's what I'm talking about go Roseman! , and yes WE DO HAVE TO PROVE to A LOT of you HID growers.. I only have 8 months of growing under my belt but when I was 13 I grew a plant in my backyard and was really into this High Times article that was in a 96 June issue I think? could be wrong but anyway the guy had this closet... In his closet was a series of shelves that were I'd say 2.5' tall and 2' wide and 2' deep (this is all guesstimating) and ran fluorescent tubes. The thing that interested me the most was the perpetual cycle he had going and he grew clones flowered right away when the rooted and each one gave him a little more than a 1/8 oz and he harvested a few every 2 weeks giving him a oz each 2 weeks. Back then that was HUGE to me and it's stuck with me ever since and I wish I could find what issue it's in. Anyway that was 11 years ago and I've moved plenty of dank from the triangle and know my shit needless to say and CFL's produce better quality bud as far as indoor growing goes... Yea HPS gives bigger buds but call me crazy I'd wrather have quality over quantity... Since the fluoro's are closer to actual sunlight the plants produce more terpines IMO ... My Alaskan Thunder Goo grown under 1k HPS wasn't as potent as what I get under my 252w of CFLs and mom felt the same way and she's a old school hippie with a HUGE tolerance so just sit back and talk shit or just watch the bud get better as more people go to CFLs..... I got something for that chart too that came from Greatful from Head Seeds and it was his comment that made me get into CFLs even more... My computer is scanning for viruses and my new firewall is giving me shit and not letting me get to manage attatchments to upload some flix but I will shortly... I have plenty of big buds to share

show em some sweet sweet nug digity!!!!!!!! the only argument i have is for density as even greengenes said he could make his crop denser. but i have found this alot to di with the genes as well as lighting so really i cant associate cfls with less dense nugs, its all about how you use them

Yea I say strain too! Cuz the SR71 PK and this Mendocino Purple and the Maui Wowi Tooty Fruity all get rock hard the Thunder Goo get's that bubbly diesel look going but when I gave a small dose of Gravity holly shit did they get hard!!!

As for pics right now my pc has been fucked with!!! All of a sudden I'm missing very important folders from My Documents including my video and my pictures but I can still access them other ways and it now takes forever to open My Doc's so I have a way to upload some shots in a bit don't worry I won't let you guys and gals(where you lady growers at?) down ..

That's great and all and I respect your skills bro but don't leave us... Wont you be upset when you upgrade to that 400w and you yield only a "little bit" more??? Like I've said I've seen what can be done under HIDs and I will show a pic of a room I helped with when trimming came. That said even though the guy admitted it was his WORST harvest to date and I'd hope that was the case cuz I saw PK's that were 14" tall and yielded 8g dry!!! under 2 1000w HPS ... My gut has NEVER been wrong and it may be stupid to go with just my gut, but on top of everything I've seen and the results I get I think you should stick with the 460w of CFL and just dial in you space and strains cuz unless you're growing tree's inside over 4ft you stay CFL IMO :twisted::twisted::twisted::twisted:

These 3 shots are of plants grown under 2k HPS and the strains are SR71 Purple Kush, Mendo Purps, and Super Silver Haze x Trainwreck ... The Mendo's are the tall ones and they aren't what everyone else has or like mine. It's special purple some guy in Mendo has been working on for 15 yrs I'm still trying to get a cut cuz it finishes in 7 weeks with pleny of purple and a great taste..

This is my 2 Thunder Goo's who's cola's were just as fat and dense as any plant in those pics above and were grown under 252w of CFL's hmmmmm do I really need to spend more money for maybe a few more grams and loss of security??? Did you guy's know that Digital HID Ballast are VERY bad for us growers who want to be stealth?? The cops have a frequency scanner that will go nuts in front of houses with digital ballasts.. All the HID cats I know wont fuck with them cuz of that and have seen dudes busted from it.. Just something to think about :bigjoint:

CFL is to HPS as Cat is to tiger sure they are both cool and they both can hunt. but one will sure rip your face of would the other only scraches the surface

After reading this thread (and a million like it) i'm still curious if anyone has done a side by side compairison of cfls and hids?
now theres a few ways you could do this, either you'd have to compare an equal wattage, lumen level, or say $150 worth of lamp.
For my money, cfls might be useful for cloning, but i like intensity and penetration (oh baby) over supposed ideal spectrum (which is still up for debate)
I'd also like to mention that when talking about the price of lights, cfls are always quoted as just the bulb price, wheras HIDS always have to have ballast, reflector, cord and mogul socket included in the price, i personally think this is a little silly, i mean, you still need to buy cord, sockets and refloctors for these wonderous cfls as well, and dont tell me you don't because you have that stuff lying around. I have a bunch of mogul sockets, cords and reflectors lying around too.
Anyhow, i've got an extra 400hps lying around, maybe i'll do a side by side with some cfls. Just to satisfy my own curiousity.
All in all i must say, i'm pretty impressed with some of the buds you cats have grown using what i've always dismissed as a fools bulb, but hey, if it works, it works.

Please do SpruceZeus it would be nice to see, I will eventually when I have extra cash or if I get a free HID setup, cuz in the beginning months of my grows I was a little disappointed with the density of my lower buds but that changed once I got some mylar... So if I go bigger I'm just going to get T5's and Envirolites in a Hombox in the corner of my room and pull of some amazing shit!!! I've always been the guy to take the other route, and as for cheapness with cords and bulbs you can go to Walmart and get 23w CFLs for $0.93 each!!! $12 for 276w! then 2 3 socket vanity fixtures $16 for both then 2 lamp cords to wire em up is another $4 throw in $4 more for the 6 Y sockets you need and it's still cheaper than a 250w HPS system with hood and you get advantages with the poor mans setup like more Points of Light and the more usable PAR with each bulb... If I had the cash I would make 2 boxes identical and just have a 250w HPS in one and 276w CFL in the other the extra watts are to try and match the lumens to the HPS and I truly belive the CFL plants will come out better in every way...But until then this thread is fine..

Also I made this thread to give the newer growers thinking of going CFL confidence and not let the shit talking of HID friends or growers on the net push them into getting a HPS... YOU DON'T NEED ONE! Follow me and what I do and try and stay with the type of strains I run and you'll never want to bother with HPS and by the time you get sick of CFL and want to upgrade(doubt you will) LEDs will be cheap enough and be taking over the indoor grow scene...

Ive gotta say, that if Lumens IS up for debate on HPS vs CFL, youd best use both styles at the same grow. Lions and tigers and buds oh my.

Ive been on Craigslist and every city has got some dude tryin to slang a downed lightpole for 20 bucks......

All I know is when I FIRST seen CFL grows on the Net, I was blown away. I thought it was fake. Then I was thinkin I didnt NEED a BALLAST, a HPS bulb, and my grow would be simple. And it is.

I made the switch from cfls to hps 150. The difference in the crystals is crazy. My cfls 253w, 1x65w, 2x42w, 2x26w warm & 2x26w cool cab made my leaves sparkle with crystals, after swithching to the hps Ive notice no new crystals. The buds have gotten hella bigga, but no crystals, wtf. So I decided to add in the two blue cfls to mix up the spectrum. I guess Im mimiking the sunsystem setup with the floro and the 400w hps, nice but a fucking rip off. By the way, My 65w cfl made me put on shades when working in the cab, that thing was bright. I dont have to wear shades with the hps. for what ever thats worth. Where can I buy me some polished german polished metal like what comes in the sunsytem reflectors. Its time I start making some reflective reflectors.
OFF the subject did you guy see the special on one of science or history chanels last night about medical marijuana. That shit was crazy, Mark emery took the crew(and myself along with them:) into the mother of all grow houses in canada. This dude had a 1.5mil setup, with 12foot hydro trees looking like some sci fi shit, he reached up into the tree to pick buds off like that shit was some real fruits. crazy thing, his med card is only good for him and two other people, wtf happens to the other 5klbs? For real for real google that shit.

What you watched was from National Geographic called - Marijuana Nation w Lisa Ling it was pretty good but I like Marijuana Inc and The Union more...

Ok now to the HPS LOL no more crystals huh?? Well that says something right there if I were you I'd toss it and go all CFL it's worth it in the end for quality. A lot of bud don't mean shit when you need to smoke more of it to get stoned. I would wrather have a little bit of 1 hitter than a pile that takes 5-7 hits but thats just me.. I've also noticed that cured CFL bud is smoother and tastier than HPS...

I didn't like marijuana inc, painted a way more negative view of marijuana, describing a typical home grower as a gun toting child abuser who sends their kids to school smelling like pot..... The one last night painted a much more equal picture of the whole story...
Did you happen to catch what was on before it about the hallucenogens... great story as welll...

Last night's National Geo show on marijuana was great, expcet they pointed a finger at Cannibas.com and other grow sites. I don't like for us to get that kind of attention. Some good caring nosey conservative might complain.

CFLS are Cheaper, Easier to find and replace,
can be bought in the perfectly needed spectrums or kevins for the cycle you need,
if you drop one, it doesn't destroy your entire crop, the do not put out massive HEAT,
you do not have to VENT the HEAT,
you can use them in a small grow space,
you can move them around easily, and
place them right next to your best biggest bud or cola, they can be re-arranged easily,
and they were my first love anyways. They were there for me when I needed them, and the HIDs were not.

I don't think CNBC made it look bad, if anything it was just the one family with that cry baby BITCH who acted like cannabis was the end of the world and ruining kids... It's that mentality right there that keeps pot illegal . Everything she complained about was due to prohibition not the direct use of cannabis. The fire next door, well if they could have had someone come in legally and wire the grow room safely that wouldn't have happend. People coming into town to rob homes for pounds that may or may not be there wouldn't really happen if people in the cities could grow their own. The list goes, I like Marijuan Inc more cuz it was about my state mostly and my Grandmas area cuz she lives in Mendocino County.. I like how they interviewed local growers in the Emerald Triangle and showed they came from law enforcement and politics. That guy in Marijuan Nation with 1.5 million dollar room was the biggest DOUCHE BAG I've seen in the growing scene! Plus it was more about Cananda than our situation in Cali. I think they both equally presented it not bad nor good and kinda left it up to common sense which most people don't have these days.. But CNBC is airing Marijuana Inc way more than I thought they would, I was thinking it's just going to come on once and that would be it but they have a whole site dedicated to it. Also had a poll and last time I checked 97% of 30,000 people voted yes they would like to see Marijuana legalized ... They also have a lovely slide show of some really nice strains too!

you guys my first grow i used a 400 watt hps and yeilded close to a pound

the strain was a bulky strain though

with a primo strain top of the line, you should get atleast 1 pound with a 600watt HPS

whats the most that can be yeilded by 600watts of CFL in any configuration?

honestly, no lieing

I got give big ups to Mr. Rosman as I got to this site through the stelath hydro website when i purchased CFLS for my first grow, i saw his review and searched your name on the internet and it led me to here.

that was like 2 years ago

anyway, i soon was convinced my cfls would not be enough and bought the 400watt hps mentioned above

so what is the best yeild u can get with 600watts of cfl?
