Wow you guys are full of great info...so...obviously the floods have better penetration/coverage per m2...god the more you research the more complicated it gets lol! My inlaw bought a small hps flood for 14 bucks from the hardware store..think this might be adequate with a few cfls for good measure..

Yeah I know but I'm strapped for "serious" cash...i guess I should rephrase my question....are cheap ebay led globes better than cheap cfls? I'm currently vegging under cfls but I've started taking the babys outside because the cfls are slow and gutless...i can't afford to set up my other hps sooo...am trying to decide wether to get more..cfls or start cheap with the leds? Cheers guys..
Get urself a T5... I got a 12 bulb T5 HO for $200... That's 648 watts of T5 lighting... They seem to work pretty good to me :/

Fwiw, I think if I wasn't so gun-ho on LED's I'd be seriously considering the new Philips Master Color series of bulbs right now. They've got some new ones ?coming out? that are higher wattage and designed for HPS ballasts. That 150W CDM bulb (MH ballast compatible) would rock my 2'x2' tent, though.

I just bought a 135w LED 6th generation 7 band grow light from mix-wholesale on ebay for $95 shipped. It has 45 three watt LEDs including UV and far IR. It's a very good spectrum with dual blue and reds, white 12k, etc. The penetration of LEDs is really only useful at 3w and above. Any less is a waste. This is a very good deal for the money, they are quite thin and generates almost zero heat. You can hang it shining down, or you could hang it against the wall for that all important side lighting.

I run this LED along with a 400w HPS, a 4 bulb T5 and several CFLs ranging from 26w up to a few big 68w. BTW_ I really like the 68w bulbs, they really have good penetration and are quite bright. I run reflectors on most of my cfls. Right now I've got a ChemDog that's over 5' tall and should be a huge yielder, I'm expecting 8oz dry from this one plant.
