I had poor luck with DWC, so I moved on to RDWC- where nothing replaced the need for a chiller.

Once I got my water temps down, it was game on.

Of my friends who ran DWC, it was a crapshoot; some buckets would be fine, others would shit out- right next to each other.

My opinion is to go with a hempy style- or scrounge up a chiller and go full RDWC.

Either approach has an effective answer for root rot that DWC does not.

My room temp never reaches 80. Im running 1600w, 4 plants, x4 27gal totes. With 18/6 I can run water temps as high as 76/77. So why do I need a chiller again when Im just going to flower from here on out?

My system is very small and I make it work well without a chiller.

I agree that anything larger than what I have needs a chiller. But theres better investments for $300/$400 for the beginning grower. This thread was originally about that, yes?
water is able to hold the most dissolved oxygen around 65 to 68. that's why a chiller is a sound investment.

To be more precise, water holds more oxygen the colder it gets all the way down to freezing, on a geometric scale.

Plants don't like water cooler than about 60f, it slows their metabolism.

One needs to understand the underlying concepts well before making decisions.

I've run both DWC and organic soil in Airpots. For me Airpots are the way to go. DWC was time consuming, changing res, balancing PH, adding nutes...

Airpots I water and that's it. Top dress a few weeks into flower. The growth is slower but I'll take that rather than hearing my wife say I care more about my plants then our kids.

Yield I haven't seen much of a difference as I get fat colas regardless.

I have an 8 outlet commercial air pump and a water pump w/ a waterfall. My DO rates are more than ideal, regardless of being 5 degrees give or take higher than your "chiller 68 degrees". I also run hydroguard, so running low temps suppresses all bacterial growth (good included... which is what Im going for hence hydroguard).

good point about the most DO closest to freezing. i was highlighting the sweet spot for hydro/DWC.
