DWC and Oxygen (an essential nutrient), not air, aeration or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)

Lately, I’ve been reading about the positive effects of dissolving oxygen continuously to insure minimal safe DWC dissolved oxygen saturations and even DO supersaturation.

Water that is low in DO is evidently a problem for some farmers, root zone hypoxia, fungi proliferation, root damage, all kinds of problems related to low oxygen issues.

Any of you have any thoughts, opinions, hands on experience, scientific research about continuous administration of supplemental oxygenation to insure and maintain DO saturation and/or DO supersaturation through the growing cycle?

Been thinking out of the box on these cold winter days.

Cheers

I posted this on another site the other day, minimal interest there.

If I understand your thinking, bottled oxygen? Are you talking soil or hydro? I'm sure there are lots that have done this but it's probably cheaper and just as effective to add DO through the use of agitation be it bubbles or waterfall/fountain effect, but that's just my thoughts. Pretty sure if the results were that spectacular then it would be the norm. Just another thing to go kaboom in my shed lol. What I have learned, and the hard way lol, is the importance of root zone temps and the ability for the water to hold more DO when kept below 70 and for me 65. Very interesting stuff though and probably worth a look.

Budley, thanks so much for responding. Thanks for sharing your experience, ideas and opinions with me.

My interest is specifically intensive continuous oxygenation in DWC hydroponics primarily, intensive soil oxygenation is yet another matter, a secondary interest.

Yes, bottled O2 will work fine, the equipment and pure gas must be cost effective. The oxygen equipment must deliver a large volume of pure oxygen, be dependable, low maintenance and run continuously without failure for months. And yes, that is possible and can be done economically if profitable production exceeds the cost of oxygen and oxygen equipment. Mechanical oxygen equipment would be more dependable and “fail safe” than electrical oxygen equipment.

I’m thinking pure 100% oxygen and plenty of it, not just a small volume that little electrolysis generators produce, H2O2, or aeration. Supplemental pure oxygen is packaged and comes in numerous forms; high pressure commercial O2, aviation O2, USP medical O2, electrical O2 generators, chemical O2 generators, LOX.

Evidently oxygen supplementation with pure O2 is a new and different concept that aeration, aerating with air. I think this is worth a look too, so let’s pull the covers back a little and take a closer look at oxygenating DWC’s with a lot of pure oxygen.

I like to think out-of-the-box and share my thoughts/ideas and some things I’ve learned about this with you. There are many ideas circulating that relate to DWC oxygenation. Most that I have seen and heard have little or no scientific factual basis but just sound good… like air is oxygen, air contains plenty of oxygen and air and oxygen are the same gas, H2O2 is a popular cheap antiseptic excellent for kill germs and microorganisms too. H2O2 also kills microorganisms in DWC, soil and root zones, that may not be too good. It also appears from what I’ve read over the years that many growers are not aware of manipulating DO saturation and supersaturations with pressure and oxygen concentration – see: Henry’s Gas Law.

Imagine 78 F DWC water having DO supersaturation >20% Supersat continuously – fungi don’t grow, propagate or thrive in this much oxygen.

Your thoughts?

Cheers

Yes. It would be a huge waste of money and the start of problems you won't have an answer to. Nobody here will either. Just guesses.Theoretical hypothesis and actual practical application are extremely different. If you didn't know. But I strongly encourage you to go out and lease the cylinders. Of course federal law requires registration of the tank number and the reason for use when you go get them. Buy a "K" size to last a while. What type of regulator do you use or do you just attach a line and dip it in the drink and hope for the best? How do you test for O2 saturation levels - dead plants?

Some of you people need a life and something else to distract you a bit.
Says the guy on the forum post about using pure oxygen who doesn't seem to know where he ended up :wall::hump:

also since you can't read between the lines / at all , I am agreeing with you that this is a bad idea and i don't recommend trying it out. If he wants to try it out though i am interested in the results.

either way enough feeding the trolls :bigjoint:

Retired RN, kid, and I have forgotten more about gasses than you will ever learn. But please - share your expertise. We are eager to hear how to produce $45 a gram pot.
Someones a little salty, so lets get this straight I agree with you that this is a bad idea, however If someone else is doing the experiment I am interested in the results.

Now i know i said I was done feeding the trolls but you are all hot and bothered i can't help myself. Waving your credentials as a retired nurse around like its a 12 inch babies arm of a cock claiming you are the guru of gases is laughable at best. Depending on what units you worked on ( I am a PA here in Michigan just FYI ) your "expertise" would vary greatly you could have been an ass wiper all the way up to caring for patients in the neuro ICU. beyond that just because you can give 02 to patients doesn't make you an expert in gases a 17 year old EMT with his thumb up his ass can give a patient O2.

So next time you feel like getting boisterous, shoving meaningless credentials in my face, and changing the topic to oooh yeaah well ... WHAT KIND OF SUPER POT CAN YOU GROW HUH ? go ahead and hop up on the counter, sit ever so gingerly on your thumb and spin, it's much easier and more effective way to get the point across that you are a jack ass

Toodles

You are one dumb fuck. You don't know shit about what nurse does and your ignorance is glaring. "Toodles" girlie.

If it was useful or cost effective, people would be supplementing with it already. Probably for just as long, if not longer, that co2 supplementation. Obviously, water surface agitation via air pumps and power heads is, up to now, the best/cheapest/most efficient way to do this. I run a reef tank, and the fact that I can support an entire ecosystem in a tiny box using these methods tells me they work fairly well. It's also the way the ocean aerates itself naturally so I think there might be something to that as well.

Hey look at that you found some results for me to look at, A scholarly journal article no less Thanks .
Now I don't have to wait for the thread author to post results and these are peer reviewed awesome. :bigjoint:

Since the only other thing i know about you is that your older and retired this is the best i could come up with to return the favor

I was talking with Budley and yikes, lo and behold look what in the world has jumped out from under a rock, flailing, screaming, cursing, and calling names, clearly mad at the world and maybe at me too.

All this negative hostility about just mentioning few words about a new idea (Oxygen), something different than air but out of the mundane ordinary day in life that has clearly stimulated hostile, adverse reaction by these few soul.

I do apologize, sorry you chose to read my thread... I'm OK, you OK now, be happy now.

Clearly this subject is way too stimulating for some folks to even think about much less discuss intelligently without an auto-aggression (knee-jerk) response... Alien, like an Event Horizon or more-so like visualizing one’s own death when lips, ears, fingers, toes and face turns pale, then light blue and in short order dark blue and the cold creep of one’s mortality suddenly becomes reality.

Classic Med-School Pathology Rotation: A pathologist friend of mine always opened his lectures every day saying this, "Death is like an out of body experience but you don't come back and life's party is over. I love dead people, they make my day worthwhile. I love my work." Then he would smile at the shocked class and often wink at a cute med student.

No Foul taken personally guys, but a general character observation is crystal clear, that's all.

Cheers
