MPs may be forced to discuss the reform of Britain's drug laws after a petition calling for a Parliamentary debate on the issue collected more than 100,000 signatures.

Reform of Britain’s drug laws could be debated in Parliament after a petition backed by Russell Brand and Richard Branson collected more than 100,000 signatures.

The e-petition was led by Green MP Caroline Lucas to urge the Government to review the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 within the next 12 months.

Her campaign was boosted when a number of celebrities, including Sir Richard Branson, Sting, Dame Joan Bakewell and Sir Ian Gilmore, former president of the Royal College of Physicians, backed the call for a rethink over drugs policy.
Brighton Pavilion MP Ms Lucas said that, with the Government is spending £3 billion a year on its drug policy, it was worth " checking whether Britain's current approach is value for money or money wasted".
As the petition has surpassed the required 100,000 signatures, it must now be considered for debate by the Backbench Business Committee.

The head of the governments drug body got the sack for telling the truth about drugs based on scientific study, do you honestly expect anything to change because of a debate?

Just some of the Stats>

306,000 heroin and crack users in England

60% of heroin users in England are in treatment under the NHS costing Millions and they still go out and rob and steal for their 7-10 bags a day.

Many commit crime to pay for their drugs. Heroin, cocaine or crack users commit up to half of all acquisitive crimes – shoplifting, burglary.

But Cannabis is SOOOOoooo BAD!!

WTF!!!

Who gives a damn about those stats. Just comparing the drug to alcohol is more than enough. The government has no intention of changing. They implement these e petition type things to fool you into thinking they are listening to us..

I give a Damn!! when others are going without so some Junkie low life can be a drain on the system and claim extra benefits and never have to work....But that's ok as long as they are in treatment? but still go out robbing and causing misery...

I've never robbed anyone or anything....and been smoking for 25+ yrs and I tell you in the eyes of Joe Public Potheads are in the same catogory as Smack Rats thanks to The Government, Do-Gooders and News Papers, and now some Government paid Doctors too..

I've never been to a Clinic to get my "fix" and always pay my way in life.....certainly don't go out robbing so I can have a Joint/Splif.....

This news story is old.... I found out the day it popped up; looks like someone was a bit late to catch up with the news.
