Draining A Roughneck??

So you have to change the rez every two weeks or so. Well what is a prescribed method for getting the water out of the tubs? I mean you have net pots with plants in the top so is there a drain set up that can be but in? if so what kind of thing is it? Or do you pump the water out and how if so...

Just put a pvc valve at the bottom and make it water tight. hook up a hose to it and turn the nozzle to let the water drain out. Put the other end of the hose in a sink or outside to your garden

You could also drain it with a "python" like they use for changing water in aquariums. It's a hose that connects to your sink and uses water pressure from the faucet to suck with the hose. hook it up turn the faucet on and it will suck the water out of your res into the sink drain. The Python brand is the original and most expensive. Aqueon makes one about as good thats cheaper. If I was going hydro thats how I would drain it.

Just get a hose and put it in the bottom of the rez. Take the other end of the hose and go to a lower area than your rez. Suck on the hose to get the water running through and watch it drain out. It is the same way that people drain in ground pools

Licensed plumber to the rescue.
You can purchase a small valve at the home store called a petcock. Like the one on your radiator, or the bottom of an air compressor. Buy some small gaskets as well. Drill a suitable size hole for the valve you have and place a gasket on the inside as well as the outside tighten on your lil valve and VOILA you have drainage. This is probably easiest way to go, and have a clean setup.:joint::mrgreen:

in the past, i used to use a cheap submersible pump (10 BUCKS or less), and a 20 foot (or however far it is to you closest drain) coil of 1/2 inch tubing. simply run the hose to your drain, or window, even a bucket. plug 'er in and wait 5 minutes.

This might help. I put rubber washers on each side that i got from Lowes (plumbing dept. pvc aisle). Half inch tubing, spigot/petcock. 3/4 inch fitting (male threads & female coupler), and use a 3/4 to 1/2 reducer. Look around the aisle you should be able to find a pvc nut for the 3/4 fitting. I use some pvc glue to put it together (hint do this part outside not in your basement). Here's a pic.

Hope it helps.

Check this out... http://www.midwestsupplies.com/products/ProdBySubCat.aspx?SubCat=720

I used to do a lot of beer brewing and had a bunch of these spigots lying around. They've worked great for me and your can probably find them at a local brew supply store depending on where you live. The one I have hooks up to a 3/8" ID hose and makes draining real simple.

BTW... In the link posted above, on the "Italian Spigot" the red discharge tube rotates in the housing. So if need be you can rotate it 90 deg to the side or 180 pointing straight up, that way your container can sit flush on the floor & it will get pretty close to draining everything from the container.
