So i wasn't very prepared today when two door to door christians showed up at my front door today. I told them i am an atheist in the sense that i do not believe in god, but that i do not know for sure whether or god exists or not. I told them i was raised a christian and the reading the bible was why i renounced my faith. I talked to them for about 15 minutes, had a little fun joshin' them around a bit with them and they asked if they could come back, i thought for a second and told them yes, sure. When you guys come back ill be better prepared to show you exactly why i stopped believing.

I have long forgotten the passages that made me a non-believer, about slavery, genocide, etc. etc.

I went upstairs and found my bible, it's the "New Living Translation"

I was wondering if anyone would take some time and help me find the passages in this specific book that talk about all the monstrous things god said, did, or had us do in his name. That way when they return, i will be able to open my bible and show them the highlighted passages first hand. And have a little fun watching them squirm at not being able to explain the horrifying things done in gods name. lol.

I know i probably wont be able to get to them, but there is always a chance i might be able to get them to think differently, or start asking the questions my pastor was never able to answer for me other than, "god works in mysterious ways."

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you very much guys.

I'm all over it, I will get back to you on that. It wasn't the Bible that turned my atheist, but it didn't help that I actually started studying it.

Edit: 2 Thes. 2:11-12
1 Sam 15:3

What I like about it is that you don't have to be a bible buff. It gives you the exact passages so you can easily go verify the text in your own bible. I have found some differences between my bible and what is posted on the site. There are variations from bible to bible.

Shouldn't you know the passages if your faith stopped because of them?
No. I doubt it was a single smoking gun that caused him to lose his faith. More than likely it was thousands upon thousands of separate smoking guns and glaring inconsistencies all converging to one obvious conclusion.

I had, at one time, almost the entire old testament memorized. Of course, I was preparing to become a minister. That has been about 11 years ago and I have pretty much completely forgotten everything that was in the Bible; I just had no use for it anymore.

Numbers 16:41-

And of course God has changed since the old testament, right?

This is a funny video about the old testament god:

Judges 11:20-
Genesis 38:9-10

Those passages in evilbible will be so easy to defend against. I was reading some of them and they are just rediculous in their assumptions.

Zaehet, lol you have that much time in your day? What do you plan on taking away from meeting with them again? Converting them? Never happen. Spirited debate?..you get PLENTY here. I would think the hour you spend quoting scripture could be spent better..perhaps volunteering and/or donating to battered children's center would be more fulfilling given the circumstances with your brother and knowing how you feel, THIS is something you can do instead of feeling powerless..empower yourself..you never know who you will meet or what doors will open. IMO

Also Zaehet, I'd recommend you visit a website called Biblegateway. You can search verse by keyword and see dozens of different translations of the bible at the same time. It's a great resource. Personally, when I was studying.. I preferred the New American Standard Version.

This is important and I forgot to ask. Do you know what denomination these people are? Were they Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons or just evangelical Baptists?

He's also not going to solve the homelessness problem by volunteering, so why do that?

How do you defend these:

Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged from Israel. (Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT)

"If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives." (Leviticus 20:13 NAB)

If a man commits adultery with another man's wife, both the man and the woman must be put to death. (Leviticus 20:10 NLT)

Make ready to slaughter his sons for the guilt of their fathers; Lest they rise and posses the earth, and fill the breadth of the world with tyrants. (Isaiah 14:21 NAB)

Those sound pretty terrible and damning.

The Jews were supposed to be a holy people set apart for god. They were the chosen holy people and the laws were to keep them holy.
