With certain strains I feel full of energy, sativa strains, its never a problem though, Indica's usually knock me out if I smoke them later at night

I agree with Led Zeppelin - I always liked the band too

It's usually strain dependent

An indica may give you a rush for an hour or more, but then it's sleepy time.

Sativa's tend to keep your mind working without the sleepy effect

If he doesn't start until evenings, maybe he should start partaking a little earlier. Since you seem to be talking about potent indicas which gives a heavier body buzz, somewhat sedative in nature, the stay awake at night effect is probably more from socially provided stigma issues than it is from the smoke.

Beginners may feel a bit nervous, almost paranoid especially if you really get buzzed simply because of the unfamiliarity and increased lifestyle risks associated with this new activity. Fears of the unknown may be the larger reason for what is keeping him up at night.

Worries like,
-will I get busted
-will I enjoy the experience
-when will I come down because I've got plans later (like sleeping)
-I don't want to loose valuable friends/associates so I'd better be careful,
-will I get addicted, etc.

Give him a few weeks/months and he'll be saying the same smoke puts him to sleep. Then get him some Sativa dominant for more upper energetic highs, and it's all good!

I tend to stay up doing things when I smoke. I find it hard to just lay down and go to sleep if I'm high. I usually end up reading for a couple of hours or something.

bluerocker, you hit the nail on the head. props to you.
Thanks bud. I was a bit surprised how I got a bit nervous from smoking as from past experience it had always mellowed me out, made me feel great. My first stretch of smoking was nine years from when I was a teen until I went into the service when I quit. After that I didn't use for nearly two decades, and when I started back up, I was such a lightweight. Probably took over a month to finally regain my former casual buddha-belly nature. It's got it's up side tho, takes less to stay high.

Like it's been well stated numerous times, it often functions like a stimulant, yet at the same time tends to be naturally relaxing/calming. Personally I get stoked to play guitar (or my gal) after lighting up!
