does this method to grow work?? !!

I got my plants in pots sitting in a tray of water which is about 2 inches deep meaning that the soil in the pots is in theory only wet on the bottom 2 inches, whilst the rest of the soil is dry.

The tray is always at 2 inches because i got a tank of water feeding water into the tray and a valve which closes the intube once the water level is at 2 inches.

My question is, will the plants still grow properly considering that only the bottom 2 inches of the soil is wet?

At the moment im just using small pots which is about 4-5 inches worth of soil so i think it wont matter so much, but what will happen when i start using bigger pots where the soil depth is about 8-10 inches? im gonna have alot of top soil that isnt getting water.

unless in wrong, please help.

thanks

If your soil is sitting in 2 inches of water than there is certainly MUCH more than 2 inches of water in the pot as the dirt pulls up (wicks) water.

hi alacn

sitting your plants in water is inviting PYTHIUM (root rot)

If you plan on doing this you will need the following things

1 x aquarium air pump (big enough to run tubing into each pot.

1 for each plant a small hydroponics basket to sit upside down inside the bottom of your existing pots.

1 airstone for each pot

place your hydro basket upside down inside your new plant pot
connect the airstone to the tubing and put it inside your hydro basket
run the tubing up the side of your new pot and connect to the air pump
do this for each plant

then transplant your plants into their new air basket pots turn on your air pump and sit it in your 2inches or however much of water.

this then gives the roots direct oxygen without having to use something as aggressive as H2o2

Hope this helps.
