im going to start a new hydro grow today, iv been doing the 12/12 in the past, but i want to go for 18/6 because of rest time and electric bill ( which is fuck all , im just a tight arse) so i was wondering if the dark in 18/6 needs to be leak proof which means ill have to close the closet door ever time or can i just leave them open , thell still be in the shade with barely any light , but it wont be complete darkness, thanks,

It should be pitch black. Stand in your space w/ the lights out. If you can still see your hand an inch in front of your face - it's not dark enough. Cover the doors with some black poly if you have to.

It should be least as dark as it is outside at night where there are no other lights. Shaded is no where near enough. Even closing the door may not be dark enough. Shut yourself in the closet and see how much light comes in around the door.

Safest bet is pitch black. Just remember keep it the same every night. Worst you can do is light up in the middle of the 6 hours. 3-4 times is all it takes to hermie it.

IMO I don't worry about light leaks during veg, if you can veg with a 24/0 light schedule then why would why would a small amount of light do any harm in veg on 18/6

exactly....i have to keep a close eye on my grow because of heat problems. when lights are out i go in with my little flash light check my meter then leave so im guessing that takes 3-5secs at the most i dont see how that will hurt my plant in veg but i can fully understand why it could cause problems in the flowering stage.....if veg can take 24 hrs of light then how can they possibly hermie in veg from a little light leak?
