This is a super noob question lol but do seeds go bad?

I have a medium size bag of about 200+ seeds of girl scout cookies (friend had a pound of it that selfed and for helping deseed it all i got a handful of seeds lmao) and im noticing that many of them are splitting open, as if they had been germinated! i dont see any tap roots emerging from the hulls and they are stored dry in a ziplock bag at around 40% RH and room temp (70ish F).

I dont recall seeing any that were cracked open before and I just grabbed a handful of them to germinate and thats how I noticed. The genetics are pretty fire (imo lmao) and have been consistent too, ive grown out 10 so far and had maybe 3 (obviously) different phenos out of the 10 and all 10 were female.

Will these cracked seeds still germinate? Also, how can I properly store them to ensure the seeds survive however long Id like to store them for? Ive had them for a couple years now and pop a handful each year.

Pill bottle in the freezer or cool dark place. Cracked seeds are useless seeds. I have beans from 07 still popping 3/4

Send to me for testing :)

But as long as they are stored right like in a freezer they should be good for many many years

Ive germed some seeds that looked split

So you might be fine

If your serious about giving ((Bad)) seeds a serious chance...... You'll have to Boof em.

@Karah has a seriously good success rate with this technique..... Thank you again for walking me through it Karah..... Even though some didn't pop.... I knew I gave them every chance possible using your method.

I've never heard of freezing seeds. I've got mine in the fridge.
Some can store for 5yrs others longer... all depends on how well sealed the container is holding the seeds, people use silca gel and other methods to suspend the seeds as well to protect from actual frost issues on the shells of the seeds. Plenty of info online about this but I personally just think a cool dark cupboard is fine enough :-)

I'm thinking the worst thing for seeds would be big temperature changes. (Humidity is relative.)

Yes they do go bad. Be the answer to your question.
I just went through some 3 year old seed stock. Didn't store these seeds in the most optimal environment. Ha
Germinated 10 with only 2 cracking.
Stored properly could have lasted a lot longer.
:peace:

Since, knowing how I'm not as disciplined as some others. I just make new seed stock every couple years or when I feel like it.:P
