do plants grow thinner top buds if plant height exceeds vertical hangin light height?

I have most plants which are short and under the canopy then some half sativas that are tall that I let grow around the outer parts of the canopy and their height is about halfway up a hanging 1000 w hps. Ive tied some, purposely 'broken' the stem to stress it and Im not sure I notice a difference. Right now their progress ia the same at 3 week flowering. any thoughts?

As long as the leaves are getting light it is happy. The top of one of my sativas has not had direct light for almost 7 weeks now and it has a nice big cola on it.
