DIY with Quantum Boards

just got my quantum boards in today, VERY excited to get them up and running. going to use them to fill a 4x8 tent. they will look something like this.

that is 8 vero 29s a mix of 3k and 4k running at about 80 watts each with a 3k quantum board in the middle running at 125 watts. giving me about 445 per side, so 900 watts give or take for a 4x8 tent.

I will post some pictures when its built. perhaps even later tonight.

Odd question for those combining the QB with standard style COBs. For some reason I thought standard COBs had to be higher above the canopy ? The mars 600 my QB setup replaced had o be 24" where as now I can be down to 12" with the QB's. It seems like a mix of light's height adjustment to me?

I couldn't answer that question for you. i have no idea. I am, however, quite delighted over these boards. In my head i am assuming this will work. If it doesn't it still looks cool.

cobs @ 30 to 50 w could be run at 12 inches just like your running your qb setup without issue.i have a few colas at 6 inches from the cobs and running them at 35w each with no bleaching at all.

That really depends on how hard they are driven and if they have reflectors or lenses.
 
How would you calculate the ppfd for these? I apologize but if someone could run through it once (or quote if already stated) then I can adjust the parameters to get my final results.

The Blue Dream is a Humboldt Auto with a 70% sativa / 30% indica mix. Sativas do stretch a bit but she is now mostly flowering and i think she will pretty much sit pretty.
She is 42" from bottom to top. Main cola is 4 nodes in length but will add more photos once it begins to fill in. Both are in 18/6 schedule with temps between 68° and 72° running all day.

The Blue Coral is a Moxie breed cut with lemon og. Heavy indica. I plan to update grow as it begins to build. But for a 1 panel build it is killin it against that chinese bullshit.

Stay tuned.
Bro - post some new flowering pics when you can. I wish others had some QB flowering pics. These babies rock.

First you have to decide how hard you want to drive the board, how many boards, and how big a space you want to cover. Then you can get a close ball-park estimate of the PPFD you can expect.

Yep! I understand how to calculate the ppfd, I'm just having trouble reading the chart provided on northerngrowlights website. I don't understand the wattage being drawn and the correlating efficacy.

Relationships are important. The harder you drive the board “watts at board” (voltage times current) the less efficient the board is…as in “lumens per watt” at board. Watts at board goes UP, then lumens per watt goes DOWN.

OK so to find the efficacy I divide the lumens per watt by the LER? Also, when it says that a driver can take 2,3,4 boards at 250w, would that be split evenly between them? (Considering I'm running in series not parallel)
1 board = 250w
2 boards = 125w
Etc

  • HLG-80H-C700 with 2 or 3 or 4 boards for 90 Watts
  • HLG-120H-C1400 with 2 or 3 or 4 boards for 170 Watts
  • HLG-240H-C2100 with 2 or 3 or 4 boards for 250 Watts
  • HLG-320H-C2800 with 2 or 3 or 4 boards for 250 Watts

One HLG-80-C700 will power 1 board at 75 watts
One HLG-120H-C1400 will power 1 board at 158 watts
*Though specs say a HLG-120H-C1400 has max voltage of 108v and post 1 in this thread says board will need 112.6v. But, if they say it will do it, then they have probably tried it! :p

Sweet I'm starting to grasp this all then :) How did you get those numbers though? That's what I'm trying to figure out. Is the wattage divided between multiple boards or a constant for them all?

And if you had a HLG-240H-C2100, that would power 2 boards in parallel at 1.05a each. Power to each board would be 115 watts. And then you would have a 230 watt photon generator like no other! And if you order a pair that you want to run in parallel, I read that they will match them for you...so the current is close to equal.

The same HLG-240H-C2100 really could run 2, 3 or 4 boards in parallel. And each time you added a board, the whole array would be more efficient. The question is, how deep are your pockets!

Don't you need a 185 1400 to run 1?

so using a 240H-c2100, if you ran them in parallel or serial would there be a difference in output?

Trying to keep the budget below 4k, but still as low as possible lmao. Right now I'm looking at 20 boards, seems to be perfect. In a 8x5 area @ 75w I should get about 1079ppfd, @ 95w 1276-1292ppfd, and @ 115w 1474 ppfd.

I am considering just running them in pairs on HLG-240H-C2100b. Keeping it dimmed until flower then bringing it up as I introduce more c02. Thing is, of my numbers are right, this setup will cost just shy of 2500. Not bad AT ALL :D

Honestly I could get away with less, but I'll probably just pull a couple lights for some experimental grows.

Just a small update on the flowering under QB Panel build.

Deep penetration at lower stalk , mid area branching and lowers have leaves at horizontal to light spread or praying up. Blue Coral to right is bushing up nicely. Blue Dream has setup budsites and trucking along.

18/6 light schedule ..... 72° running temp in tent ( which i can keep tent zipped closed all day !!!! ) Mars Hydro dual case fans are a help i imagine. I am not running optics and like the spread as is. Today is has been rainy ( RH up a little but manageable ).

Love the fact you can see light spread down thru lower stalk and branches !

I understand that in series they split voltage, and in parallel they split amperage, but I never have gotten an good explanation as to how they differ from an output perspective
