im lookin for a cloner i can build that will be able to make 20 or so good high quality stong clones to go into a ebb flo set up. i've been looking and searching but could only find a areo mister one. any links or tips would be great. Cheers

i made a cheap bubble cloner

this is the write up i did on a private forum i post on for some non grower friends

DIY bubble cloner. 8 sites, hopefully roots in 7-14 days. Tap water, half capful of h2o2.

Parts list.
2 gallon plastic containers (ala rubbermaid) - Dollar Store - 2$
1 package childrens foam door hangers. - Dollar Store -1$
1 small aquarium pump. - Goodwill - 1.50$
2' of aquarium hose - Goodwill, came with pump - Free
6'' ceramic airstone - Fred Meyers - 3.49$
1 roll black electric tape - Dollar Store -1$

Start by taking one of your trays and covering the outside completely with your electric tape. I actually painted mine black first, let it dry, and then added my black tape. Your goal is to lightproof the res. You can use silver reflective tape as well, and is what I was going for but it wasn't at Freddies and I wasn't trippin' cause this is only temporary for me.

After you've got that all done it's time to prepare the tray. Get yourself something round about the size of a silver dollar, or a sobe lid, starbucks frappucino lid (what I used). Anything you can trace the sites on the tray with. I made 8 sites, about all I could hold on this thing.

Take a razor and cut out the traced holes in your tray. You can use a saw, or scissors, or whatever, just be careful when making the cuts that you don't crack the weak plastic.

The next thing to do is make the inserts. The most common thing people use is neoprene, it's the easiest to work with and readily available at most hydro stores, but it's also about .60 per insert. Mine foam cost 1$ and I'll be able to make 10 inserts with this package.

Just trace the holes onto the foam (childs door hangers, like I said, 4 in one pack on my end) and then cut the foam out, make them a little bigger in circumference than the holes in your tray so they fit in nice and snug. Cut a line from any side of each insert to the middle. This is where you will put the clone into the foam, and also where you will safely remove it from when it is done.


Now get your pump and tubing out. Connect your airstone and lay it in the bottom of the res. I cut a small notch in the top side of my res for the tube to fit in so I could keep my lid closed snugly. Plug your pump in and that's ready to go.

Now fill your res with tap water, no need to adjust my water but some people might. My water from the tap is around 100ppm. No need for distilled or ROed water in my case. Your results may vary. It is better to use some time adjusted tap water (48 hours in a gallon jug with the lid off will help you remove a lot of unwanted chlorine)

And lastly, tho not necessarily needed in a bubble cloner, we add the humidity dome. In this case it's just the other container with it's lid off, turned over, and sat on top of our box. Spray the inside of the box a few times a day (not so much that the water beads and rolls off) to help keep your kids under 100% humidity. Clones have no roots so they get all of there water through the foliage and the leaves need energy to stay healthy enough to supply the new growing roots.

So now you take your prepared cuttings, dip them in hormones, and put them in your cloner. Remember to put them in the sites that have the most concentrated amounts of breaking bubbles underneath them. Keep your stem about 1" from the surface of the water. Put your box under some fluorescent lights (20-40w is enough) on an 18/6 or 24/0 light regiment. I prefer 18/6 cause I'm all about lower power bills.

buy this:
1 big rubbermaid tub (like 12 gallons or something)
a strong 'warm' CFL (like 26w)
a light socket with a plug in the back (find at lowes or home depot)
a cheap extension cord
some rockwool
an ice tray

cut a hole in the lid of the tub just big enough to fit the bottom of the bulb through, but smaller than the socket
put the bulb in the bottom of the lid so it hangs down and screw the socket into the top of the lid
moisten the rockwool and put your clones in it
put the clones into the ice tray(s)
put the ice tray(s) into the tub
plug the extension cord into the socket plug on top of the lid
done

I did this for a while, but now just put the rockwool into my netpots with hydroton, makes it easier to position the clones

i have a 100% root rate with this. just mist often, keep it moist but not wet.

My temp inside the room the cloner is in stays between 65-70, with a single light inside there the temps hover right around 80, which is great for clones. I have small slits cut around the bulb in the lid so it doesn't get too hot. I also open the lid about twice daily to mist, this probably helps keep things in check. I've considered building an aero-mister for clones, but this has them just bursting out with roots under a week, so I never saw a need to change things.

can you give me some more details about this cloner. whats the black tape for? got any more pics? thanks

are the cfl's you use just a basic house hold style or are they made to grow with?

basic cfls will work

a few of those 26w cfls will work or even a tube floro from like an old fish tank

The black tape is because i taped up some black tarp around the outside, as i ran out of black paint for lightproofing (a glowing box in the corner is a bit suspicious)

The cfl is a 'warm white' spectrum CFL from lowes, whatever the highest wattage they had (26w i believe). I used 'daylight' spectrum first, thinking the more 'veg-friendly' spectrum would be best for clones, but a side by side comparison showed much better results with the more yellowish warm light.

Heres a pic of the outside, you can see the tarp wrapped around it. On top of the cloner is my dryer, and since it's in use at the moment, I figured I'd take a picture of that too for you to enjoy

exactly, tube floros would work best, as the light is better spread, but I already had some CFLs from when I first started growing, and I couldn't figure out how to attach a tube light into that tub

looks like a nice dryer too cool fan setup, ever thought of racks instead of hanging the buds?

Yeah, that was the original plan actually, but it saved me a trip to the store to just use wire like that

I'm planning a new one with racks right now, it'll have the fan in the bottom pulling through a carbon filter about the length of the container. If I have a crop in the dryer and leave for a while when I come home the smell smacks me in the face as soon as I open the front door. Of course, it's a very good smack
