DIY $40-50 dehumidifier?

I was just thinking let me know if I am wrong here because I may be thinking opposite of what holds true.

I was thinking a humidistat/dehumidistat such as

Buy Fantech FH 20 Dehumidistat | Fantech FH20

connected to a holmes fan which fits perfectly in a 5 gallon bucket

the 5 gallon bucket has some sort of filter holding water absorbing crystals such as Soil Moist to absorb the water then it exhausts on the other side with another fan that runs all the time....


My thinking is that the intake fan (Holmes) along with the absorbing crystals should absorb the moisture in the air while the fan on the other side exhausts it outside of the grow area. Let me know what you guys think.

I too have been tryin to conjure up some idea for a DIY dehumidifier and had an idea very similar to yours. I was thinking of putting something like this in a 5gal bucket with a fan at the bottom of the bucket that pulled air through the DampRid and into the growing area. Also I've been thinking of something in similar design of an active carbon scrubber but instead of active carbon just fill some panty hoes or cheese cloth with rice, calcium chloride (or rock salt), charcoal and maybe some unscented cat litter. I'm not sure what mixing all of those things together will do but I've heard stories where each one of those have been used to extract moisture from the air. So basically set that up outside of the grow area and draw air through it and into the area. I had one of those DampRid containers in my box and the RH didnt drop much but the soil seemed to dry out faster so I removed the DampRid from the box but left it in my closet because I wasnt sure if it was helping the plants by stealing their water.

or just spread some rice on cookie sheets EVERYwhere and switch it out every coupla days.

You could give calcium chloride a try. Find it at a pool store, same think that damp rid uses.

if u want to spent 40-50$ u should just buy a dehumidifier

the 5 gal bucket idea should work i use rocksalt in an open bucket in the cabin of my boat to absorb moisture during the winter months
