Did I overdry?

Hi all,

If you could help me with this it would be greatly appreciated..

Basically, we chopped our girls down, hung them in a room at 70 degrees/55% humidity for 7 days and then trimmed them and put them on a drying rack for another 7-10 days in the same room.

They were just put in jars and are reading from the RH meter that was put in the jars is 50-52%.

What should I do???

Thanks for anyone who can help.

That 7-10 day period should have been curing days. I usually dry using your relative temp and humidity until my stems don't bend and the outsides of my bud are dry. Then I begin curing in glass jars, following proper curing and burping protocol.

Drying Room: 45-55% Humidity, 65-75 *F

You definitely over-dried. The hanging should only last a few days. Stems pop but don't snap, and the outside of the buds is dry to the touch. My biggest plants get hung for about 3-5 days then they go into jars and the burping begins for another few days until the moisture content in the jar is around 58-60%. Then they get closed for the cure. Unfortunately, once they have dried there's nothing you can do but smoke it. May not taste or smell like what your used to but, still works.

Check out Boveda packs, they make a 62% that you can just toss into the jars and forget about it.
if you want to go the cheap/no-cost route, I have over-dried in the past or had some really dry weed. You can put a small piece of potato in your container, for about 12 hours max. then remove it. That will re-hydrate it without changing the taste. Then cure to dry...

Once its dry you can't cure the bud anymore. You can cure the trichomes and continue to improve the smell and flavor in that way though. Oxygen is all that's necessary for that to take place, remember you still have to burp/have air exchange when using boveda packs to cure properly

Everyone here is correct. I've used the Boveda's in a similiar situation and while you can't cure anymore, you can certainly improve the taste and appearance. bovedapacks dot com

Thanks everyone… Bad news I guess :(

In my situation, would you use 72% packs or 62% packs?

How would you go about curing? Would you definitely use the boveda packs? How long/often would you burp them?

One guy on another thread said he dries his down to 40% and prefers it that way. Is 50% really that bad?? The branches and stuff are still mobile and when you break it it doesn't turn to dust…

Will keeping them in jars still help to improve the smell do you think?

Would you throw them in there? How would you go about burping them and how long would you keep the pack in there?

Use the 62% Bovedas..they're made for cannabis. I won't advise you not to burp them, but a few times in the past, I've come into possession of some improperly dried bud, RH down around 45-50%, & very crumbly. Jarred it up (quart jars), threw in a Boveda 62 (they're sized for different jars) & within a few days the RH was up to 61-62%. Not sayin' it was cured, but it looked, smelled & tasted WAY better. I've also kept bud for over a year jarred up with Bovedas. The packs only last 5-6 months or so. They get hard when they're no good anymore. You'll have to open the jars to change the Boveda, but only once every 5-6 months. Good luck.

Yep, Boveda 62 is what you want. And I'm down with GroErr. Dry your bud, then throw 'em into jars and add a Boveda pack. Check, through the glass, after a week or two for mold. If there are no signs of mold, keep the jar sealed (no burping required). My thoughts being, burping doesn't really make sense, since these packs are made to absorb or emit, to keep the jar at 62% rh, So we shouldn't have to burp out any excess moisture. I've also used these packs to treat dry buds. As posted, it works great! Makes that harsh bud smoother and much more smokeable and to me it even adds back some of the smell/taste.

Bottom line, I cured over pound of buds (6 different strains) just like that last season and it was the best cure ever for me (previously, jarred and burpped...for weeks). As they say on TV, "Try it, you'll like it." :hump:

Good luck :peace:

Thanks for the information! Mine is 45-50% right now… I opened them after a couple days and smelled it and it smells ok… I'll wait a week and check again… The thing is my stuff isn't really that crumbly (luckily), so I'm not sure.. I know probably not as moist as they would be, but it's not breaking into dust… yet anyway...

I dry my MJ in a small, dark tent with slight air circulation in and out of the tent.

I dry until a stem "snaps but doesn't break in two" (if it breaks in two then it's too dry at that point for my preference). I then transfer the buds into glass jars with a hygrometer. The initial reading for all jars is 60-62%.

I store the jars in a cool, dark place, and open the jars twice per day for an hour. I continue doing this every day until the hygrometer reads 55% after a 12-hour period.

I've read that ideally, the drying in the tent should take a week (slow dry), and curing in jars should take 2 weeks. I try to adhere to this as much as possible, but it doesn't always work that way.

Hey bro don't mean to hijack but if I use 62% pack when I put buds n jars n put pack in do I still have to burb themQUOTE="GroErr, post: 10681559, member: 713402"]Check out Boveda packs, they make a 62% that you can just toss into the jars and forget about it.[/QUOTE]

Oxygen is required
Curing takes place through respiration and hydrolysis breaking it down during gas transfer

I already answered that........?

i didn't read all the above posts. but let me tell you this. fuk all them numbers, don't mean shit! they're either over dried, or they aren't. unless this is your first grow, you'll know. throw them into jars, and see what happens. if they still have moisture, it'll come out. if you think they are too dry, don't open the jars as you ordinarily would. double up on the time you wait to open them, and the ampunt of time the jars stay open. it seems like once you over-dry, they just aren't the same.
