Hi all I am new to growing and I do believe that I made a newbie mistake by putting fert on my baby when it is still to young, the soil I am useing is miracle grow, so I know a lot of growers say to watch how long the fert in the mg last but like I said I am a newbie. I have flushed the plant twice now but I just need some advice do you all think its fert burn or something else? thanks for your time :-P

P.S. the other plant is pretty healty I think would you all agree? I did not give it any fert. Just wanted to put a more updated pic on here.

it looks like your new growth is doing ok. with the MG soil i would wait awhile before nutes. most of the MG soil usually can feed a plant for 3months, veg and bloom. MG soil i have atm can feed for 6months, so the 2 i have in that chances are i wont even use any nutes on them due to the nutes alrdy in the soil. have to becareful when flushing witht he MG soil since the soil is loaded with nutes and time released nutes, so when you flush you could cause more of the nutes to be delivered. but like i said your new growth looks like its doing good, keep an eye on that, that will let you know if you got more nute burning going on, hopefully lower leaves will come back and or survive.

Hmmmm id say keep a eye on it, but hes right, by flushing it , im sure more nutes are gonna go to it , so try and just make the plant tuff it out , and keep updating it, even P.M me , if ever it dies, ill help you start some new ones. :)

Looks like you have some stretching going on. Are you using CFL's? If so, get that light a little closer. You can put it up to an 1" away from the tops.

sweet,

Yes that's exactly what you did wrong. A plant that small in MG potting soil doesn't need any extra fertilizer.

I also grow in the standard MG potting mix (feeds 3/6 months) and my plants don't see any extra ferts until they're around 5 to 6 weeks old and then only very light doses.

I add around 20% extra perlite to my MG because it helps improve it's drainage characteristics and helps keep it from becoming to compacted as the grow progresses.

Also it looks to me like you might have been keeping them a little to wet. A plant that size in that size cup will probably go 4 to 5 days between waterings. And hopefully you've put some drainage holes in the bottom of the cups. Don't let it sit in the run off either.

I got a bag of Miracle Grow brand Perlite at Home Depot for cheap - think it was about four dollars.

They're small/young enough for it to be really easy to do a bare root transplant. Get rid of that MG soil and put them in some quality soil without any ferts and get them in some decent sized pot before you lose them.

DO you feel ok useing MG with the ferts that are already in their? everyone keeps telling me not to use it to use soil with no to very little fert in it? do your plants do ok in it?

It looks like fertilizer burn, same thing happened to my pineapple chunk when I got a little over zealous fertilzing too early. The plant is two weeks into flowering and the bottom leaves that got burned still have the yellow color from the burn. The top of the plant looks good, so just keep the girls going and don't add any more fertilizer. With proper water drainage it is hard to over water the plants as long as your not watering every day or other day. Try misting the plants once a day if you feel they may be thirsty.

sweet,

MG potting soil works just fine. You just have to keep in mind that it's already got ferts in it and you can't go giving additional ferts to young plants that are growing in it.

Another thing you need to realize is that once a leaf (or leaves) becomes discolored from over (or under) fertilizing it's never going to green back up and become a healthy leaf again. For the most part those leaves are just lost to the plant. The reason for correcting what ever caused the problem is so that it doesn't spread and start effecting more of the plants foliage.

My advice would be to transplant the two sick looking plants you have in plastic cups in to slightly bigger containers (like the black one your other plant is in) using some fresh MG potting soil. Preferably with about 20% extra perlite added to it to improve it's drainage characteristics. But if you can't get your hands on perlite to add just use it as it comes straight out of the bag (just break up all the compacted clumps in it and get it as fine as you can).

Then you'll just need to keep it watered correctly and they will have all the ferts they'll need for at least 5 or 6 weeks. The only other things I'd recomend you give them is a little SuperThrive (@ 1/4 tsp/gallon) on the first or second watering after transplant and maybe some molasses (@ 1 tsp/gallon) on the third or forth watering. Then around week 4 or 5 I'd give them a dose of Epsom Salt (@ 1/2 tsp/gallon) to make sure they had all the Mg (magnesium) they needed.

With the exception of giving young plants to much fertilizer to soon it's my opinion that over watering is the biggest mistake most people starting out make (I know it was one of my problems). I kind of hate to recomend this but you just might need to let one of your plants go until it starts to wilt from lack of moisture before you water it again just so you can start to develope a feel for when to water with out over watering them.

Fo instance...If you would transplant the ones in plastic cups up into one gallon size containers and make sure the new MG potting mix gets thouroughly saturated when you water them in after the transplant it will probably be at least 7 to 10 days (may be more) before they'll need watering again.

As to any potential "fungus" problem with your plants... you don't have one.

For more good info on how to use MG potting soil and get good results I'd recomend reading the thread "A Test in Progress" started by "jawbrodt".

hun ,simple .. MG soil , you cant water often or youll give it too mutch fertilizer , you cant give different nutrients orelse youll flood them with nutrients , this is the base problem of Miracle Grow soil ..

the best thing to start with ( and i recommend and use ) is PRO-MIX , potting and seeding - Complete multi-mix formula .

its Peat moss, Perlite , Limestone . Thats it , the plant does'nt need nutrients when its a baby , and later on when vegetating in the 4th weed then you can had additional nutrients .

i know now thats not the case but its just for futur references . :)

Hmm , im lookin at those cups ... Hmm .
i think now you need to change your cup into something bigger, try and calculate . how mutch height its gonna grow ( if the plant itself will be 4 or 5 ft tall ) , if 4ft , then use 4 gallon pot , if 5ft use a 5 gallon pot .

make sure the soil does not have nutrients in it , and let your little baby grow, and when you see she caught on good, then i would suggest just cutting those yellow leafs off, since there good for nothing .

hope this helps! :)

thanks all for the sound advice I have repoted the little one in the cup to a bigger pot and cut off the dead leaves so now that I think I am armed with some better know how (I think I was over watering) I am hopeing the baby pulls out of it and is ok.
Thanks again.
