Just some idiot
When you say it like that, it sounds quite elitist. The reason Euro-Football has never been popular in the US has nothing to do with lack of contact, or the fact that it is popular everywhere else (not just Europe & 3rd world countries.)

I lived in Scandinavia for a while, and I must admit that, when I was there, I loved Euro-Football. I knew the fight songs, wore the jerseys, and played the drinking games with my friends. When I came back to the US, however, I found it quite boring.

If you look at the popular US sports, US-Football, basketball, baseball, you'll find the common denominator in that each game allows for the start & stop of action at critical moments.
-The basses loaded at the bottom of the ninth.
- Jordan's 3-point shot with a 1/2 second on the clock.
- The 45-yard field goal with 5 seconds to go.

When you have a vested interest in such a game, you get a total sense of euphoria that no other sports have (well maybe tennis... but you get the point.) If any of you non-US peeps doubt me, youtube the Steelers 1972 ‘Immaculate Reception.’

It would require a fundamental paradigm shift in US culture for such a sport as soccer to ever root deeply in popularity.
Wow nicely put towlie, I agree whole heartedly.

Skunk you are right football/soccer is the most popular sport in the world. And it is very popular for kids over here, it's just not a popular pro sport over here. And the one guy hit the nail on the head, and hour for a 1-0 game is not very entertaining. I noticed that goes for hockey too, I love hockey but I grew up in a city with a team, a popular team but most of southern america could give a shit about hockey. Just the way it is over here.

And I agree with you that soccer is a tough sport, they have to be athletes big time but it's just not all that big here. In fact today is Sunday and most families here is america will be around the tv watching the NFL. I also think it has a lot to do with male bonding over here, holidays have football games and whole families watch it. I know in my household as a kid it was the only time I spent with my father so it has some sentimental value to me. I would also be willing to bet that a lot of guys on here would say the same thing. And on a side note I'm 33 in those 30 some years I have never seen our pro soccer team play, in fact two days ago was the first time I saw an add for the team, it's just not big here.
I'm almost 33 myself, and i've never watched a whole american football game... even back in the 80's with that Refridgerator fella. It just never took off, and I found it too boring. I also don't like basketball or baseball, although my city does have quite a good basketball team, for most english guys, and for most of the world... football is king.

Oh, and it's 90 minutes... have injury time right at the end... maybe 3 or 4 extra minutes. A lot can happen in those minutes. Football over here too is about bonding. And you will never find a better atmosphere than an FA Cup final.

Football has all of those too. A beckham free kick in the dying seconds of a game to save them from loss, or maybe go for the win. Set pieces, set plays. Penalty kicks, free kicks, corners and throw-ins.

In fact the US has gotten SO into football that at the last world cup they were given just 6-1 odds of winning the competition. There are American players in the premiership, bundesliga, serie a etc, etc. There are American owners of Man Utd... Aston Villa... there was even talk of Gates buying out Southampton...

Does that not prove to you that football is building up its fanbase, the fact that now they're even getting tv ads over to you.

Also the part about:
-The basses loaded at the bottom of the ninth.
- Jordan's 3-point shot with a 1/2 second on the clock.
- The 45-yard field goal with 5 seconds to go.

In football there are lots of last minute goals. Take for instance Manchester United Vs. Arsenal on the weekend. Over 1billion people watched this game (can you say that for any NFL game) and it also included and 92min goal. Thats 2 mins into injury/extra time. West Ham Vs. Bolton. Bolton score in the last minute to level the game.
The fact that you generalise football putting every game into the boring category shows that you havent watched any games. it's not always 0-0 or 1-0.
In a game here a couple of weeks ago, the score was 7-4. Thats a goal evey 8.1mins. Or is that not exciting enough.

If reclame was any indication of popularity then erectile disfunction, aethsma, and acid reflux have apparently reached pandemic levels in the US.

Oh man. I knew that was coming. I don’t think that was entirely directed at me, however I never said Euro-Football is boring… A billion viewers is certainly impressive. That’s what, one in seven humans… but I don’t know a single person who watched a soccer game this year.

And yes it is exciting, and has nail biting endings… But US sports are designed to have them. It happens weekly. (ok. So does soccer. It’s not the same. I like both sports. It’s not the same. What else can I say. It’s not the same?)

Furthermore, US sports are designed to start and stop at critical action points… almost like a chess match. I’m not saying this is better… just different. And I don’t know a single kid that plays soccer who wouldn’t switch to US-football in a heart beat if his mom would let him.

There are a few constants with US-soccer: It has and always will have a loyal yet small US fan base, Europeans will predict the imminent emergence in US popularity, and it will never become nearly as popular as the big three because it’s not culturally in sink with the US system of sports watching.

Only because you're no good. As soon as you win something, knowing you lot you'll never shut up about it.

Imagine the US winning the world cup... shit, you guys would not shut up.

Oh my god. I just got a boner. We already refer to the winner's in the NFL, NBA & the Major League as "World Champions." Striving to be legitimate "World Champions"... Nah... I just don't see the benefit.

Well if France can pay Brazil to win 3-0... anything is possible. I'm talking about France 98.

The US have the dollars, so to speak. I bet we'd let you win if you asked nicely. It wouldn't surprise me actually, a nice set-up like that to root football into every Americans heart and mind.

Didn't I hear a rumour that football in the US was going to be made into 1/4s so they could fit more adverts in and make the game longer.
Next thing your know, they'll be playing music during the game and then when it stops, all the players have to stop whilst theres and advet on, like a kind of sports musical chairs.

Also the only reason US games stop at vital points in the game is so they can squeeze a few adverts in.

But at the end of the day, if you dont want to watch/play football you dont have to. If you want to play american sports go for it. But you will never truly be able to call yourself world champions in any of US sports as they will not become a world phenomena like our football.

And in response to the initial question of the thread, I think Beckham has made a large impact, not nearly as big as it would have been if he was fully fit and winning stuff with LA. After all he's prob the most marketable sports star in the world ever.
Do I think it was wrong to move to LA? for football reasons, yes it was a massive mistake as he's gone to play a shit level of football, but he and his wife have prob sat down and said, davids getting old, lets retire into sunny LA and make a packet.

On a non sports thing, I always thought it was funny when watching tv in the US that the show finished, then they had a few mins of adverts and then played the credits of the show just finished. Then more adverts after.

I despise Beckham. I doubt highly that one man can change the minds of every american to stop watching football/nascar and tune into a match of soccer. Plus Americans really aren't on the level of the Europeans/ Asians. They are just much better.

CHELSEA FTW
