Hello Friends!

Just want to show you my current project. This probably won't turn into a real grow journal. I just want to show you a few basic things about my setup.

You can see that I trimmed off the lower leaves that had gotten a little gnarly. (See previous photo.) I think that was caused by nutrient burn, a problem that I'm still struggling with at times. For this strain of pot, you need to keep the nutrient concentration down really low, under 350 ppm at this stage, or else the leaves dry out and the plant gets sick pretty fast.

Here the leaves look perfectly healthy. It's a good sign when they stick straight out to the sides like this!

The main growth stem (think of a tree's trunk), called a "Cola", is always covered with the heaviest and most potent flowers. So pot growers sometimes cut it off early, causing 2 Colas to form in its place. This can be repeated all over the plant I think, but I'm just cutting a few places this time as an experiment.

This picture illustrates the procedure, called "Topping":

Just a few days later I took this photo:

You can see that the new Colas already stretched a lot and their tops are developing.

April 21 - Start Flowering Phase
I changed the lights to a yellower color to trick the plant into thinking it's Autumn. And adjusted the light cycle to 12 hours on/12 hours off, also more like Autumn conditions. Different nutrients, too. Her leaves curled a bit from the stress of all the changes, but she'll recover.

Day 15:

Changed water yesterday (2nd time during flowering). There's still some room for her to grow taller, I hope enough.

Here are some closer pics:

Did you spot the mold? It must have started a couple weeks ago when I was spraying the plant with mist. It lowered the temp and raised the humidity, but water on the leaves also encourages mold to grow. I took these photos after I sprayed the plant with Neem Oil earlier today. It's worked really well for me in the past and it's a natural mold killer.

Here are some closeups of a few affected leaves:

Otherwise the plant is pretty healthy and she's growing fast. I also have some very good news today. That will be the next post.

First Signs of Flowers!

Just spotted these today (hadn't been looking):

This plant is grown from a 'feminized' seed, so it should be female. Those hairy, white things are pistils. They are the beginnings of the plant's flowers. They arrived right on time, about 2 weeks from the beginning of flower inducement.

Here's a closer image:

Here's another flower site:

Here it is closer:

Here's a different pistil:

@daveroller:

Your dwc plant doesnt look like it has mold. It looks like it has a calcium deficiency. You may want to get a small bottle of Botanicare Cal-Mag and add 3-5ml/gallon of water. 3mL if you are using tap water. 5mL if you are using RO water.

It should stop getting worse after that.

Interesting... I'll look into that. Thanks.

Hey Infinitalus, it does look like a calcium deficiency in my leaf pictures. I can't tell from your profile how long you've been growing. Have you had much experience before joining this forum? I'm wondering whether this could be a case of nute lockout, i.e., too much nute, rather than deficiency.

That's because the pH in the res water goes way up whenever I try to raise the nute level above 425 ppm or so. But around 400 ppm, the pH goes down very quickly during the day and she sucks in lots of water. So she seems to be happier there.

I'm using AN perfect pH Connoisseur base nutes. The company says that you should never need to add a Cal-Mag supplement to them, because they contain enough of those minerals. So if my plant is low in calcium, then she probably needs more base nutes, right? That's what I've been adding whenever the tds drops below 390 ppm.

I'm not saying you're wrong about anything. I'm just stating what my limited understanding of these products is. At this point, I'm guessing that it's nute lockout from all the times I attempted to raise the tds up above 430 ppm. If you disagree, please chime in. Anyway, thanks for your valuable input.

Plant's looking good! I'm really being careful with the tds/pH for this one.
Flowers are starting to pop out all over now.
Possibly the AN Connoisseur nutes are having a positive effect also.

Trichomes developing on the little green leaves:

I screwed 2 PC fans to the right side of the light box to blow the hot air away from it.

(Day 32 of flowering)

Stopped growing taller a while back. It's the perfect size for my cabinet, so that turned out nicely. Now she's just growing flowers!

All photos from today:

Lots of nice buds developing all over.

Here are some closeups. Notice the trichomes. Those are the little white dots all over the leaves. They're like tiny, clear lightbulbs full of gooey cannabinoids. I use these sticky leaves for making medible cookies. I only smoke the flowers, though, because they have the highest concentration of cannabinoids. Burning leaves make too much smoke.

COLA! COLA! COLA! COLA!
Several colas are forming. These are the main stems that should get covered with flowers eventually. Still got about 3 more weeks of flowering to go!

Ooooh! I love these extreme closeups! Bud porn. (Sorry about that cat hair.)
