Seems that the penalty you had to pay for choosing 90 CRI vs 80 CRI no longer exists with Cree

DURHAM, N.C. -- Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE) announces the XLamp® eTone™ LEDs, a breakthrough set of chip-on-board (COB) LEDs that delivers beautiful 90 color rendering index (CRI) light quality at the same efficacy as today’s standard 80 CRI LEDs. Delivering up to 155 lumens per watt (LPW) at 3000K CCT, 85°C, Cree’s new eTone COB LEDs provide the highest efficacy available in the industry compared to competing COB LEDs of the same size and color. The enhanced performance of these new LEDs can radically transform the output, efficacy and size of LED luminaires in applications that need high quality light, including retail, museum, high-end commercial and medical.

Odd SPD with a very high peak in the 630nm.

I compared it to the CRI 80 SPD for Cree's CXB series:
eTone vs CRI 80.png

BTW these charts have an equal surface under the line. In both cases 100. So essentially you see the percentage emitted per wavelength. This gives a much better visual comparison of where the SPD's differ as opposed to the relative SPD in the datasheet with the peak set to 100%.

So relatively there is more of the greenish blue and (reddish) orange in the eTone SPD, while there is slightly less of the yellows and reds.

The lack of extra FR in the eTone SPD sort of negates the point of this CRI 90 variant for growers I suppose.

Later thought I should have added the regular 90 CRI line as well.

The eTone looks more like a color space enhanced 80 CRI SPD rather than a more efficient 90 CRI.

Also ran the SPD's through an online CRI calculator. Not sure accurate all that is, but it generated better CRI numbers for eTone. Calculated CRI would be 94/93 (R1-8 and R1-15) for the eTone and 92/89 for the 90 CRI. R9 is 63 for eTone and 59 for 90 CRI. The 80 CRI comes out at 83/77 and R9 as 10.

For our eyes, filming and photography the eTone would be better, but yes for growing plants I wonder if there is any benefit to the eTone.

though 90 CRI is picked because of the FR and that's even less than with the regular coatings:
eTone_RGB.png

Less "green" and more "reds" might be better? Though the YPF for the eTone looks similar to the 80 CRI and higher than the 90 CRI. Not much in it though. Around 85% and 86% for the 80 CRI and eTone and 83% for 90 CRI.

Lumen to PAR conversion for the 3000K eTone SPD is 67.7 (ie 67.7lumen is 1umol/s)
