Could I be...?

Dont know if this in the correct forum @ RIU, but I think I may be developing some sort of an allergy to "smoking" pot. I have smoked all day for about 12 solid years now. I have taken a few weeks off here and there due to tolerance and canna-droughts. Having said this, lately if I take a significant bong load or just smoke more than 5 hits off a joint (schwag or chronic) I get the symptoms of having a bad athsma attack. It first starts off with my nasal passages becoming inflamed and closing off (not completely, but enough to force breathing through the mouth). Then 20 minutes later I get chills as if I were in a cold climate room (even though I was perfectly fine in the room moments earlier). Of course the heart takes off to about 100+ bpms.

It comes in a wave of shitty symptoms.... then levels off...then in a wave again a little worse. It usually takes about 5 cycles/waves before returning back to a bearable state of being. Anywhere from 1-4 hours. I dont even get the "high" feeling in the mind or body that I am used to when smoking - just the unwanted physical effects. I read many other posts on different sites and read other's claims of having similar experiences with MJ. After smoking just fine for many years, they all of a sudden cant breathe, nose closes for business, heart races, etc. I remember when I was younger the elevated heart thing would happen after a large bong load, but it never felt like an out of control scary thing like it has been lately...

Also, if I take less of a hit and monitor it carefully, I dont get these symptoms as bad. Always the stuffy nose though. Its just that when I take small hits, I dont get high at all - just a stuffy head. I have smoked the Original Alaskan Thunder Fuck, the real Deisel, some very real Haze in my time and never had anything less than positive experiences with them. I am talking giant bongrips, never had a problem. Currently, when I am not high, I feel no anxiety (a term/diagnosis which doctors love to throw around these days) and have no unpleasant thoughts that put a sour note on my face. I am generally happy and positive about life. No history of mental illness (no, not even in the family) so I cant possibly accept that it could be emotionally related. Everything is copacetic in my life.

Could I have developed some kind of allergy to MJ? Or possibly another chemical in my beloved cannabis? The way alcoholics develop an allergy to alcohol after prolonged use/abuse? I always used to see homeless people on the streets, acting all smashed with a half drank 40oz in their hand, and wondered how they got so smashed from a half a 40. Then I saw this thing on CNBC about how alcoholics develop an allergy to their alcohol to the point where drinking only a small amount gets them bombed. I read of some hardcore tokers who have this problem and just take allergy medicine which takes away all bad symtoms, these people describe situations where they ended up in the hospital due to unbearable symtoms. Anaphylactic shock, etc;.

Any experience, speculation, or just plain old opinion welcome.... Post away.

Thanks,
-NYK

That sounds horrible... closest ive ever seen to this was when my cousin ate way too much, of way too potent, Canna Butter....
He was throwing up for 3 days... with Hot/Cold sweats... shivering but Sweating bullets at the same time....
i would take some Antihistamine/ benedryl and then smoke... (This normally gets me extremely high when im sick lol...)
It might work wonders for you...

Its more likely that your lungs need a break.
Buy a vapourizer or eat it and see what happens:leaf:

Yeah, I have been thinking about the Vaporizer. I have only tried a Vape once or twice - all I can remember is how amazing it made everything taste, even the schwag I tired through it. I just went on a break for a month though and still am having the problem at higher dosages. I just took two small pulls off a pipe load of some decent smoke and feel the negative shit only slightly right now. The introspective thinking and creative ideas seem to be winning tonight. Like I said though I am not as high as I would like to be. I have vivid memories of how functionally high I would get everyday before work last year, and get a little jealous of myself back then. Mybe it is the strain I have currently.

Does the Vaporizer give off anything else but the THC? If not, I am certain I shouldnt have any problems. I want to get back to puffing like I am supposed to.

Thanks,

Are you sure it's not a panic attack?

The nasal thing can be caused by just about anything, dust, the ashes, the smoke, excess butaine from your lighter, try some Alavert for that, best allergy medicine and no side effects. I've tried them all and that's the one.

sounds to me like anxiety or a onset of a panic attack. Some strains of weed do this more than others, try switching up between a sativa and indica to see which does it more. Sativas make some people too jittery to smoke them.

Nah, I know its not a panic/anxiety attack because I would have had one while I wasnt stoned. I never get clinically "anxious" in normal, un-high life. Besides, I have been smoking strong for many years and know the difference between physical and mental effects of MJ. Of course we have all taken a frightening hit of some very potent stuff before. If this shit was mild then we wouldnt have websites devoted to it and laws restricting it. I know my weed, and I know that no matter what type I smoke (schwag or chron - Sativa or Indica) I still get these physical negative effects lately. I smoked last night and was fine, but I was taking many small hits from a pipe. I have taken bong rips of kief and hash with a ten second pause that sent me to the moon before, but never had these physical things happen to me before. This is all new, in the last year. like I said, I dont even feel like I get all that "high" when this happens. When I say "high" I mean high like.......like we all know what it is to be high. And we all know what it feels like to feel like you just got done running and are out of breath. They are waaay different. I just know this isnt normal for me. Sativas are alot nicer for me (Imean a real true haze), I dont notice it as much, if at all. I'm bummed.....

I'll try the Allergy medicine trick tomorrow first, before I smoke. Maybe that'll work. Or maybe I am just too overweight to be smoking right now:hump:. I noticed when I am fatter, even eating certain things can bring on a similar feeling. Maybe my stomach lining is scarred up from choking on bong rips all through my years of smoking. A friend of mine said he actually developed a hiatal hernia from choking on big rips of chronic. He says he cant eat the kind of shit he used to or he suffers a bit like this.

take it easy on your lungs my friend.

like the person a couple of posts above me said, consume your marijuana through food or invest in a vaporizer.

i have a bong that i put cold water and ice in, it cools the smoke down drastically, and i get no cough or anything.

Sounds like you may be developing asthma. basically, your body may have formed antibodies to something in the smoke. Any exposure will cause this asthmatic/allergic rxn. Can happen with almost anything inhaled over a long period of time (smoke, pollution, dust...probably not the THC itself causing the issue, rather something combusted while smoking) You may want to see a doctor about inhalers and what not as if you have a severe rxn your entire airway can close...bad news. You said foods set it off but does anything else set it off...poor air quality? pollution? 2nd hand cig smoke?

Having the same thing happen with other foods is a little troublesome. Do you have any known food allergies?

Hmmm. I dont recall anything happening around pollution or cig smoke. I have the occasional cig smoke a feew times a week, but never have this problem. Yeah. it seems too much food will set off a similar rash of symptoms. I have been reading up on the "hiatal hernia" thing and I learned that continuous choking/coughing on big rips will eventually pull some of your stomach into you esophagus. Hiatal hernia is right next to your Vasal vagal nerve (heart nerve) an is set off by coughing over over eating, or both. They are just finding out the strong correlation between pot smokers and hiatal hernia, says my doctor. I smoked a good bit tonight and only got the stuffy nose, not even as bad as usual though. I was excited about that. Am pretty tuned right now, and it feels good. But its sad to say that this is a rare occasion.

Nope. No food allergies that I know of.

I coughed my hyroid bone out of place once...I know that it hurts, will never be the same, and makes my throat subject to damage really easily...

Goddamn thats funny. I seriously think I did something similar. Especially smoking w/ friends when youre younger:

"Dude... clear that bong load.... goog boy, now hold it in for a ten count" (cough-cough...cack-CAAACK- Hack-hack-hack!!!!!)

Peer pressure was high back then... almost as high as those flying bong hits made me :bigjoint:!!! I am sure I tore something.

Yeah man, I think we are just developing allergies to certain strains. You get older, and weaker for this kind of shit. Some people just dont pay attention to this type of thing and it goes un-noticed until they're in the hospital years later. Like I said previously - Alcoholic bums (not all of them) develop an allergy to alcohol to the point where it only takes them a couple of "tallboys" to make them drunk as Hell. Alot of people say weed is totally harmless, but maybe they dont take giant bong rips and never get inebriated the my friends and I do. Who knows for sure.
