Hello everyone. So I am trying to decide what lights we want to use I read a lot of really good stuff about LED... they cost a lot more than HSP but are cheaper to run and I would not be spending so much monies to cool the room. But I am now seeing people say that they do not work nearly as good as HSP lights do. So I started looking deeper... and it seems that some people will die to defend the fact that LED grow just as well as HSP lights do. But other people say that is a load if crap and LED give really small grows and it takes longer.

Can someone please help clear this up for me?
Thank you so much for your time:)

lol....LEDs are the future of growing...there is simply no debating or arguing this...and even today right now they do have LED lights that do work well and can grow just as good as bud HID HPS lights however...I personally use HPS lights still, LEDs are still to young and early in their development for me personally to trust them in my garden, but they do run cooler, cheaper and can provide more light/lumens, but that doesnt mean they are better, and forget about the price, there is no comparison, they are ridiculous but as i said, in the future this will not be the case, they are the next HPS, the next generation of lighting and indoor gardening WILL be LED, this is not a debate, its simple fact.

ps...IMO I personally like HPS and think they are better for growing, HID right now simply are better, if you use a 600watt HPS and 600 Metal Halide in your growroom you will hands down grow THE BEST marijuana that can be grown right now inside, LEDs may catch up eventually, but HID are still king of the hill :joint:

have a good day everyone :)

I hope not....

Okay. Thanks... why is it that people keep saying they get a lot smaller buds when they use LED? Does it effect the grow size?

my god u trying to start a rumble in here?

Watt for watt modern LED matches the performance of HPS if not surpasses it but with the draw back that u need multiple units to cover a large area and the upfront cost is much higher.
HPS Currently is the best choice for large scale growing as the coverage area is just far superior unless u have tons of money to invest in a lot of units (for example youd need 4 240w leds to get the same performance and coverage of 1 1000w hps)
LED are best suited for small scale closet growing where the heat from HID type light would be a serious problem

negative feelings towards LED are mostly based on first generation units that used red/blue only spectrums and low wattage bulbs, newer LEDs are much much better but still receive the negativity earlier units did because people love repeating what they read even if they have no experience to back it up

But wouldn't the cost of keeping the room cool with HSP male up for how much you speend to get the LED... I know nothing at all... that is a question... not a statement.

I want to be able to light a 17 by 15 foot room well. like really well. And people are saying that keeping a room like that cool is going to cost an arm and a leg.

in the long run yeah the LED will pay for itself in reduced heat and bulb replacement costs, however to effectively light that space would require a fairly large amount of units so it may not be practical

I can see what you mean. I am thinking it would be best to start with HSP then switch to LED over time.

Thanks :)

Where you have heat issues and no cash upfront issues LED is better. No heat issues and smaller fund base HPS/MH are better. For my climate in winter HPS/MH suits, for summer LED's are more suitable. LED's are cheaper to run so I prefer growing in summer.

Area the size you are aiming for, HID in a cooled hood. LED will cost you an arm and a leg. A cooled hood and good fan added to the price of a ballast and bulb is still waaaaaay cheaper than LED. LED's work great as long as you are not trying to stretch them over too wide an area.

You can still bring a cooled HPS closer than an LED panel. Plus, you are going to need good ventilation no matter what you use, so the fan's price is a non-issue. Just a little extra for a cooled hood.

HID lighting "best" generically. But if the upfront cost of LED isn't an issue and you want to grow for personal with no heat, no ballasts and their issues, no monthly elec cost, LED is awesome!

I justified the cost not by comparing to HID because I knew I didn't want that route. So I forked out $500 for LED because I was tired of fiddling with cfl. For me, I looked at my savings on one grow vs buying weed and whammo, positive ROI on first grow. Add to that the fact that the thing will last forever and it made sense.

Very happy with my LED for my personal needs thus far. BTW, I use an Area 51 SGS160.

wow i was expecting more heated dicussions
all in all i think hps\mh lights are great for somewhere you can control the heat a larger room etc.
Leds are awesome for smaller setups stealth cabinets and closets. where heat can easily be an issue
ive never had yield or potency issues with my led grows but you will need ~100 watts per square foot
cheers
