Coco vs sphagnum which is better?

I see a lot of basic potting soil recipes that say 1/3 earth worm castings or compost, 1/3 perlite, 1/3 coco or sphagnum. I know most prefer sphagnum but why? wats the big difference? Isnt coco supposed to be better for the environment and isn't that what organic peepz want?

IMO coco coir is a more environmentally responsible product, but it still needs to be shipped from the other side of the globe. If you want the most environmentally responsible medium use leaf mold.

Sphagum peat moss is supposed to have a higher cec, so in that regard it's thought to be better. I can't say how much that will impact the end product though. I've tried both, and didnt notice a discernible difference aside from my yield suffering a bit with the coir run.....but it was my first/only time using it sans peat so take that with a grain of salt
