Surprised it hasn't been done yet so that begs the question :How long till we see someone make a unit with this tech...?

I think what you mean to ask is why aren't they making them with CXA's and VERO's?
There has been a shift to cob and/or multi chip panels. But nothing that is going to make the best smaller package chip panel makers scared.

The same reason you don't see a bunch of companies using xt-e's or nichia219...they cost more money ...a shit ton compared to un-named, unknown bins. And the major factories in china don't offer them as a part of the "custom" package ;) ...
No one has ever stopped any company in the past from actually using top notch chips if they wanted to...but instead of actually investing and making a great product, they go for a "alternative" or better yet "proprietary" chip that for some weird coincidence, is cheaper too

EDIT: I might have read/taken the question the wrong way.

I don't know what some of the better pre made panel builders are. AT plays dumb with me on tech stuff sometimes, so they are hard to judge for me. But he knows what I am planning so maybe they will see something of value(for them...we all have seen the value).
And I don't know what they other top few have up their testing sleeves. Good question

I could see hans having one COB in the center and building his spectrum around it with smaller 3w/5w. He's not very whit focused but one cob could maybe add something better than what he has going on white wise.

Maybe they want to unload inventory before making such a convenient option for home improvement DIYers?

I guess the smaller LED's still do have many advantages in cases where less light is required. A 1W flashlight is enough.

I think GreenGenes point on the cost is right on. They are, in comparison to 3w/5w diodes, more expensive. If you look around on Aliexpress, there are many COB-based LED fixtures, but of course not using the highest quality components, they're just pumping them out like they tend to do with many things, in volume, quality/efficiency is just an afterthought to most of the chinese volume manufacturers. From what I've seen on there the focus (COB) market right now for some of them seems to be the commercial lighting area, tons of spot light fixtures, outdoor lighting, high-bay fixtures, using COB's, but who knows what they're using for parts and how reliable/efficient they would be. I know from pricing out my DIY stuff using the Cree 3070's, I could buy a higher end panel like an A51 by the time I'm finished. But I'm a sucker for punishment and like the the thought of DIY, even at the same price. Spec-wise they should be more efficient though, we'll see. Of course a commercial panel builder could reduce those costs compared to one-of DIY projects, but, they would be expensive panels right now imo. Would they charge $995 for a Cree 3070 COB 200W Panel from A51? idk what they'd charge if they were to build them right now, but I'm pretty sure they'd be a lot more than $495...
