Closet Hydro LED, light advices

Hello,

I just finished to built my small wardrobe for a single plant in Hydro. This is my first set up with LED lighting as I always used HPS 250/400/600 or CFL 250 dual spectrum.

This is my set up:

SIZE: H 191cm x W 76cm x D 50cm (I’m actually using only the upper part so I’d say 160/170cm height).

GROW SYSTEM: oxypot DWC system, water pump, air stone, drainage tube and pot lifted for easy drainage every week.

WATERING(optional): for the first 2 weeks I’ll use an infusion set to do some gravity feed mixed with a bit of cal/mag by vitalink and formulex, universal profile.

AIR CIRCULATION: 2 x 120mm computer fan (with anti dust grill) installed in the bottom to provide fresh air and move the plant branches.

AIR EXTRACTION: RVK 4” with rhyno carbon filter installed on the top and exhausting out (hole sealed with expanding foam). I’m using Variispeed to regulate the power of RVK.

LIGHTING: 300 w LED light vipar spectra.

LIGHT REFLECTION: Reflecting sheets,Prime quality fixed all around, top and bottom.

NUTRIENTS: Dutch pro A + B, formulex(universal profile), cal/mah vitalink, ph down vitalink.

SUBSTRATE: acqua clay pebbles, cultilene propagation cubes, propagator.

TOOLS: Ph pen, EC pen, thermometer/umidity

I’m also adding a Net to do some SCROG and topping for the first time.

I was wondering if the 300w LED viparspectra would be enough till the end of the crop or I got a few options:

- Should I ad one more 300w when it comes to flowering time with daisy chain.

- Get a 450w LED from same manufacturer and daisy chain to the 300w.

- Get a 600w LED from same manufacturer and daisy chain to the 300w.

- Install now a cool tube (which I already have) for a 250w HPS and lumii ballast 600plus only for blooming. Connected to the air extraction and filter to avoid raises in temperature.

I’d like to keep the third option as least cause I want to finish and start with LED if possible but if anyone got an experience with HPS/LED running alongside, you are more then welcome to share

I’m gonna do one photoperiod plant JACK 47, from sensi seeds.

Some pictures attached.

Please let me know what you think about my set up and what I should do with the light, I’d love to get some advices from experts or someone who already used those kind of lights.

Thanks guys [emoji4]

Just following up, I sent back the 300w viparspectra and ordered a 600w which i’ll Use in the same set up for a single plant.

I saw different grow journals with this same light and they were all doing great.

Anyone got any other advice about lighting or set up in general?

Cheers

The cabinet looks fantastic and I bet it works great. With the area you're illuminating, I'd say that 175-250 actual watts used would be about right. A major problem trying to figure what led to use are the wildly innacurate product descriptions that don't give you usable info to make an informed decision. With an older Epistar style diode, most 'blurple' lamps need 35-50W/ sq ft to produce enough photons to really make the plant thrive.

Hi mate, thanks for the feedback, much appreciate it ;)
Yeah I think with that 600w LED (which is coming today) i’ll Be covered till the end. It’s my first time using LED and first time using Oxypot DWC system, I read loads of stuff but nothing it’s even close to explain properly when it comes to LED lighting.
Well just in case, if it won’t be enough powerful, i’m Gonna use a cool tube with 250w/400w HPS to use alongside. I don’t even know w/sq ft produced by this light I purchased, but it should be good for a single plant from start till the end. Did you ever try this model before?

Light received and unpacked!!

As you can see in the pictures, the wardrobe was built to fit a 300w and the 600w is at least double size. This afternoon i’ll do a few changes in the closet, I’m gonna move the carbon filter on the side and connect it to the extraction with a duct. In this way i’ll Make enough space for the light to fit in between filter and extract fan so I can use the whole space till the top of the closet and I don’t have to worry about bloom stretch as it’s far enough from the SCROG net which is coming soon.

It's a pretty neat setup!! Light wise you're fine, but if you add a little more you should be better!

I don't personally approve of the viparspectra light. But i think you should manage as your space is effectively a 2 by 2 and that light outputs about 136 actual watts of epiled. So if you want to reaaaaally max out your tent, you should think about getting a second 300W, and then you're golden.

I strong recommend against that HPS inside that tiny space!!

Try looking up Bridgelux EB Strips Gen 2, the 2 feet version? According to my calculations you should be able to max a cabinet that small with only 120-150 watts from those strips (6-10 strips + driver). And could probably be built with about the same it would cost to buy that viparspectra 300.

Please disregard my previous post.

Your 600W viparspectra should be fine for the job of maxing that tent out!!

Look into recent LED technology whenever you feel like lowering costs, and providing a better spectrum.

Thanks mate, that was my first try in building a closet and i had loads of fun! I think i’m Gonna build a new one adjusting a few stuff which I learned from the first (just some details to make it as good as possible, i’m Really fussy about precision ahah).

Anyway to be honest I don’t agree either about those vipar spectra but I saw too many different reviews which confused me a lot so I decided to try it myself and ofc i’ll Make a review and maybe start a new journal.

I think they are actually great for energy saving but as you said recent and more expensive technology it’s 100% more worth. i’ll Think about it for the future, even if i’m Already getting infos about COB lights

The Samgung and Bridgelux Strips are specially good due to the low price and the fact that they don't need a heatsink for cooling. Previously, almost half of what you spent on a COB build was just for heatsinks, now that's a thing of the past.

Mmm that’s really interesting man. I’ll get as many infos as possible and defo try to build my own.

Anyway the light seems to be a bit too big to fit now.. I misread sizes on the website. I’m doing a few upgrades to the closet but i’ll Lose height for sure.

I took all the sizes and drow a project in 1/10. I’ll first move the extraction filter on the left side and connect with a duct running on top of the light, which ends up in the fan exhaust (that means i’ll have 5”-6” less space from the top = light distance from the canopies). I’ll put the scrog net at 12”-14” over the top of the net to Have a total of 40” from the net.
Let’s say the max I can reach in size of the crop = 25” so i’ll Have still 15” distance from the light during flowering.
Do you think it’s gonna be enough considering my setup?

40'' from the net sounds like a good enough space for a tiny cabinet like that. You're also using those LEDs so your plants aren't going to burn if they get close. SooO yeah, cheer on:blsmoke:. If anything just do some LST and you're good =D

Nice one, thanks for the advice.
I’m already planning to do LST and toppings before filling the SCROG net.

I’ll keep this post updated and start a grow journal in like a week.

Cheers mate

Honestly, I started with ViparSpectra V450s, two of them. Each of them put out about 420PPFD for 212w each. I switched to COBs and learned I could put out 1000-1200PPFD for 200-250w. That’s about the same PPFD as a 600w HPS.

ViparSpectras are good for growing 2-3 ounces at a time, but they’re mostly cheap underpowered Chinese beginner hobbyist panels for people not willing to shell out the cash for a COB at any cost.

I wouldn’t roll with those EB strips except for side lighting. There’s no way they put out a PPFD similar to COBs. I would, however, take the EBs or a QB over Chinese panel LEDs.

This was with 241w of COB:

That’s just amazing mate! The crop is getting frosty as fuck. I’m gonna have a look for my next upgrade but for now I think i’ll Keep going with this as I already sent a 300w back. Do you think I should Send back even the 600w and wait like 2-3 weeks to grow so I get a cob or wait and upgrade later on?

That’s how I sorted the closet now, finished today after work. Scrog net at 12”-13”.
