Cloning in soil?

So GypsyBush convinced me to try my bonsai grow with clones instead of seedlings.

I've read and seen a lot about cloning, but it was all for hydro/aero systems. So what is the best method for cloning in soil?

I do not have any growth hormone (nor can I afford any) so I'm guessing I just cut the branch at an angle, plant it in moist soil, mist it with water, and then put some sort of humidity dome over it.

Sound about right?

Hey petedav,

vh13 just said this to me :"To root without hormones all you need to do is set the clone in a cup of water. Make sure the area where the plant will grow roots is blocked off from light, roots need dark.

Change the water every day (to keep it oxygenated) or use a small bubbler.

Reduced light and a/or a moisture tent (some kind of transparent bubble or container around the clone to keep humidity up) will make things easier for the cutting to remain hydrated while rooting."

i clone in soil with good success all the time. I just cut, dip the end in rooting powder, and put into soil. Then I put a clear bag over them (humidity dome) and make sure they are always pretty moist.

i would rough up the stem a little with a razor blade (just a little and just the part thats going to be in the soil)

but DIP N GROW can be found almost anywhere and is like 8 bucks and its enough to make thousands of clones... like a penny per clone.
i would just buy that if i couldnt afford clonex (dip n grow has all the same hormones i believe.)

otherwise just try the oxygenated water i guess, sum peeps use willow bark in the water 4 cloning... if you have that growing in your area maybe you could make a tea w/ that and it would be free...u better research how to do it though.
goodluck.

I clone in soil all the time. I first cut the potential clone off with a regular cut and the put it directly in distilled water for a minute then I cut with a razor blade at a 45 degree angle with a nice clean cut and the I take the razor blade and scratch a little bit of the outer edge of the stem and place it in Clonex then straight into soil. I then put the clones in a turkey pan thats deep with a clear lid and spray with Vitamin B-1 and distilled water for humidity and then 4 23 watt 6500k daylight cfls on top and in 1-2 weeks fully rooted and ready to plant....

I've done a lot of cloning in soil before, and the way that's been described so far sounds pretty good. I just have little inserts that go in my tray that I fill with promix, and I just cut the clone, dip it in rooting powder, then keep it under a dome and a heating mat. I give them at least one air exchange per day, and gradually ween them off the dome completely by day 8-11 depending on the strain and how they're looking.
