Clones,Veging plants & Mothers - 18 or 24hours light???????

I have one box where I have my mothers, vegging plants and clones.

I run 4 X 65W fluro spiral bulbs by Phillips. They work very well and I have reasonable results.

I have been running 24hours of light in that box for nearly a year now. I have however heard that for clones, it helps them to root if they have a period of darkness. Others have said this does not matter.

For vegging plants, I know they grow faster with 24 hours of light, and with a mother, the same is the case.

So my question. What should I do. Do I change to 18/6 cycle or stick with the 24 hours day and night, everlasting day. :-)

Peace :joint::roll: bongsmilie :peace:

really dont need to turn out that light,,24/7 for clones is fine,,will grow 30%more faster then 18/24
all my cuttings/clones/babies/moms are on the same light regimen. 18/6
Thanks guys. Here we have two opinions, which one should I go with. :-) I agree diesel, in my experience it does work fine. However I am having a tough time getting a higher % of my clones to survive. Some just don't root. I know other factors play a part but I am trying to investigate all options.

My understanding is that clones root better if they have a dark period. I wonder if anyone has experience that this is indeed the case.

well i know that when i have bought rapid rooters in the passed the instructions say to leave the lights on 24 hours.
but i dont know what kind of plants this is for or if it even matters.
i just know what works for me....

a few things you can check off your list.

humidity dome, its important that you mist the dome frequently as clones like it humid.
heating pad, the roots grow towards heat, so a heating pad is no a necessity, but i wouldnt go without some kind of heating element under the cuttings.
your cuts, making sure all your cuts are 45º cuts...
PH, making sure the ph in your spray bottles is correct was a big deal for me.
i put freshly phd water in my spray bottles every day. i notice once i did this, my success rate increased to 100%
i dont know if its coincidence or what....

anyways if you have any more trouble check out this thread.

Thanks for the info. I have to agree with you on the heating pad. It is winter around my parts at the moment so it is much colder. I don't have a heating pad and I think that is my problem. What could I use? I know where to buy one, but lets just say it is not a good idea for me to go there as I think it is being kept a eye on, if you know what i mean.

So lets say I am Mcguyver, what could I use instead of a heating pad. :-)

well macgyver would rest the clones on his rock hard abs and just use his body heat. im assuming.... but since your not macgyver i suggest buying one off the internet... or sending a friend into this hydro store being watched by the feds

I'd say 18/6 is the best veg cycle, after all, don't we try to reproduce mother nature?

so instead of a heating pad...
you could you use....
a lot of those hand warmers.
or one of those hot/cold packs that you can either stick in the freezer or in the microwave like for when you sprain your ankle.

i usually do my cones under a 24 hour light untill they take off and start growing then i go to 18/6 and for my vegging and mothers i go with 18/6 allways because just like every living thing it needs sleep and rest or you will wear them out... try stayin awake for around 30day and see how worn out you are a plant or weed is the samething cuz they are living things... so when you are vegging or mothers use 18/6 and it wont ever hurt your clones to but them under 18/6 aswell ..i just choose to use 24 untill they are rooted

I use to clone under 24 hours of light but i found my cuttings stays green and looks healthier when they got their sleep.

But that's just me..

I think I am going to try to give them some sleep. I will firstly give them 3 hours of darkness and then after a week i will give 6 hours of darkness. And then we will see.

The whole reason for starting the post was because I read that plant's send the recourses to their roots when sleeping. This must help root growth, hence better cloning. But there is only one way to find out and that is to try it. :-)
