A few weeks ago i took cuttings off my mother and to see if they would root again(i put a cutting in a glass of water and it rooted). I have been watching them every day and changed the water every day or so. I have noticed about a wk ago that they started to accumulate what looked like white salt crystals at the site of the cut and up-wards. I lightly scraped the sides today to remove the white and noticed that it wasn't course at all and had no smell, so it wasn't algae. The cuttings doing seem to be dieing but hasn't showed signs of root nubs yet. I'm sure the white wasnt the roots because it hasn't grown bigger since about a wk ago.
