They are different for sure and the stuff for filtering water doesn't work for filtering air.

thanks for the tips everyone. I ended vacuuming it and then using a compressor with one of those air blowing attachments to clean it out and it seems to be operating better. I'll likely replace it entirely soon and have to keep a better eye on the prefilter and dust because it was ridiculous how much was packed in there.

I still have some carbon i bought off ebay way back then, i used alot of it on my aquarium filters before i got a non carbon filtration system. Store bought filters work so much better and the prices don't bother me for piece of mind.

Don't get me started on HID lights, I could have a bowling alley with how many old 1k bulbs I have sitting around. I throw nothing away grow related out of fear.

big debate on pulling or pushing through these filters... does it matter?
yes-- if your sucking through it and use a sock over it as a prefilter before the carbon does its job
no-- if your pushing through it and use an inline or pre-filter...

and as said earlier-
the biggest issue is beings saturated. The real way to fix this is to bake the active charcoal. This ends up dehydrating it so it is porous again and doesnt restrict air-flow, and doing its job again

the best thing to look at is the real issue in the first place. Why did this happen? was it humidity or dust?
for the guy blowing the charcoal clean with air i bet its dust. for those having to bake it I bet humidity is the issue

My fan pulls air through my filter and exhausts outside. I do eventually notice a reduction in airflow and i seem to lose the negative pressure in my tent probably due to dusty environment.

My solution is to disassemble the fan and filter and then flip the fan and ise that to blow everything out of the filter. I then put it back together and it seems to work fine.

That's what I do reverse the fan and let it blow for 10 minutes. Seems to even blow the smell out of the charcoal so do it somewhere you can get away with the smell . I also lightly hit the filter with a stick all over to help loosen everything up.
