cleaning glass with alcohol

I have recentley bought a new bong from a guy my buddy know's and as I was leaving with it I had said something about cleaning it out and the guy asked how I intended to do it and told him alcohol and rock salt and he flipped out and started saying how alcohol will break the glass down and make it really fragile.......soo here's the question will alcohol break down glass?

No. But it won't remove lime scales.

Uhmmm, Doesn't most alcohol (booze for example) spend most of it's life in glass??? And I've seen alot of glass salt shakers too... Margaritas anyone?
