the problems with using a speed controller on a centrifugal fan.

i had a fan plugged in to a speed controller plugged in to a timer.
the timer was getting hot and has a burning smell.
today the fan didnt turn on just made a funny sound.
i have unplugged the fan from the speed controller. i am unsure on if i should plug it direct to the wall with out the speed controller.

as i am a noob i thought that my self but apparently i am wrong although i was running it at about 20% and after reading and stuff i found people say not to go less then 30% but this don't explain why my timer was getting hot and why the fan works find when in the main wall socket cheap grow lush product and bad sales men i believe was the problem. i would still like to know if anyone else has had this problem but i have decided to cut my loses and not poke the gods and buy a smaller fan that i don't need to limit the speed on. my guess is there is too much resistance being applied through the speed controller casing the timer to over heat. id watch out as this thing got that hot it burnt my skin

Imo replace that timer. It may be damaged now, if lights are plug in to it and it falls it could mess up your grow, but fire hazard is the real issue.
Good call with downsizing your fan, controlers are fine but i believe in keeping it simple as possible.

well i went bigger to future proof my room but who ever said bigger is always better is wrong when it comes to limiting power i guess. i tend to replace any electrical product once it gets that funny burnt smell. i dont understand why it worked fine for 6 ish months before i noticed any problems

Sometimes you get no warning when electronics fail. I use duct booster fans for low volume apps. Cheap on amazon.

I always tend to get more or better to future proof. I still have 30 or so more citizen 1818 leds I case one goes or I want to build more lights. It’s generally better in the long haul then your not rebuying things.

Grow rooms aren’t low volume applications though. Duct boosters burn up easy especially when trying to pull air thru a carbon filter or attempting to create a room with negative pressure to avoid smell leaking out

thank god for leds or id be 50c plus in my room running hps haha negative pressure isnt really a problem in a tent unless the walls are sucking in too much

off topic question not even sure if this is a thing. can i salvage my carbon filter. it is a 8 inch filter and i intend on dropping down to a 4 inch extract fan is there a way i can get an adapter to go from 8 to 4 inchs and if i was to do so would there be enough pressure passing through an over sized filter

What sort of lights are you cooling with a duct fan? What your definition of good temps? Plus if the room is designed right or using a fan big enough for your tent or room you shouldn’t need to use intake fans. At the level my controller in the picture above will pull the door shut effectively pulling in a ton of fresh air.
