Just made a great cfl shade! Here's how. Get a cooking oil drum from the local takeaway. 20 litre metal one. Cut lengthways with grinder leaving fill hole central to one half. Punch 2 holes for hanger. Place bulb ( I'm using 125w cfl) inside with base poking out fill hole. Screw lampholder on outside of fill hole. It clamped the bulb in perfect position. Oh yeah you better polish the inside first with some bog roll. If you need a double then leave one side uncut an bend 2 halves apart and cut a secondary fill hole in the other half. Covers a metre square evenly with no wasted light. Cost nothing except a 20 quid cfl and a 2 quid ceramic lampholder. The oil drums are coated inside so not to rust.

You better be careful you'll get hot spots with that polished metal.
