Yep it's normal. I've noticed with mine that as long as the lights are nice and close, the first month it concentrates more on horizontal growth, but after four weeks or so it starts on the vertical growth. Here's one of mine the day after I topped it. As you can see, it isn't much taller (if at all) than yours.
