Cardboard sheet mulching ok?

The garden for my outdoor babies was well prepared through the year but unfortunately this has created the prime conditions for unwanted weeds to grow. My plants have been done for 1 month now.

Would it be ok to sheet mulch the area with cardboard and then mulch on top? Obviously leaving enough space around the stem of the plants. Or could this cause problems? Our NZ summer can be quite brutal and the area is exposed to all day sun with no shade.

I've been doing this for years, no problems. Four layers of newspaper works just as well. Everything breaks down in one season.
