Cant seem to get that dank smell

Ok I can not fix what I am doing wrong with my curing/drying..Ive tried curing about 4-5 batches and shit is not as dank as what ive smoked or bought...The strains are sweet afgani delicious and LSD...Before harvest they smell great.

Ive did a few different drying techniques here is what ive done so far..

Cut the branches, manicured, hung to dry in a cardboard box until bud are crisp but stem still bends a little, jared and burped for 1-2 weeks.....

Other techniques I've used to harvest are leave the sugar leaves on but cliping the fan leaves,
hung the whole plant with just sugar leaves, and cut a small plant into nugs and dried on some unbleached paper...

All seem to give me the same results in the final smell/taste.. High is good but that "Dro" smell/taste just isnt there...when I pull a bud out the jar it doesnt really smell unless I give it a good squeeze, buds are now dry and stems snap in half when bent. I have been burping this batch for almost 2 weeks now...One of my older batches that I kept closed for 2 weeks give or take a few days smells almost minty and not dank at all...Any advice would be appreciated

Sorry for the long post.:wall:

I dry in a pretty big box with Holes cut in bottom..The buds hang on string that I go running at the top...Minimum light leaks, I dont have a thermometer or hygrometer for the drying box but where I am its really dry and the buds dry super fast 3-5 days so I jar for 12 hours then lay out for a few hours until crispy then jar for 12 more for a few days then burp daily for about 30 minutes.

IT IS YOUR TECHNIQUE..sounds like ur just drying it to fast..thats the worst thing u can do for smell and taste..to keep the smell and taste dry it slower (i'd ditch the box and just hang it) TEMP and HUMIDITY is soooo important..it should be 66-70 and humidity should be no lower then 40% no higher then 50%..u wanna dry it as slow as possible..here's a little trick if u cant control your temp and humidity>>>when its drying to fast, double bag it in a plastic safeway, lucky, walmart bag for 12-24 hours or until it feels really moist again and squishy. Then re hang it for a day or so and if its still to hot and dry then do the plastic bag thing over and over until its properly dried then start the burping process

Even though some people believe that all bad tasting/smelling weed will smell and taste good after proper drying and curing, the truth is that there are types of pot with poor smell & flavor and nothing you do with the water inside them will change that.

Don't be concerned....that will happen from time to time....I can open a jar of bud and even tho I don't really "smell" it, my GF will say she can smell it in the next room....so I just think it's we may get "familiar" with the smell in our senses....just makes me grind a bud and get that major whiff sometimes....then you'll have a certain strain that is extra dank .....I just had a harvest and cure of some pakistan ryder that had that unmistakeable badass dankness ......

nah if its dank weed u will never "not smell" it. i dont care how accustomed u r to it

i had this bag of skunk once smoked it all day everyday and still woke up to how potent the smell was every morning

how many weeks do u flower before chopping? it sounds like theyre not reaching ripening point hence not giving off aromas.

depends on your growing medium as well.. Hydro plants wont develop as many terpines as a soil/organic grow.. hydro is known for weak taste and smells.

the best shit i ever grew was hydro..not the best smelling or tasting but it got me sooo damn high..it had a good smell and taste but not the greatest

All about strain, growing conditions, good 5-6 day dry or less, and cure. Over a few months of curing you should see smell greatly improve.

In flower rub a bottom leaf of a bud, does it smell? should. Have to start with good cut

I flowered for 10 weeks.

Bud smelt dank during flower..Even when drying it smelt dank...Still smells good now but you have to give the bud a squeeze to get that smell back..Maybe letting it sit without burping to bring that smell out?

My grow medium is rockwool cubes and hydroton..I've been using holland secret nurtrients...

I think it's a combination of things. I know the taste/smell you're looking for because I just found it myself.

I grew out several strains.
Greenhouse Lemon Skunk
DNA Cole Train
DNA Sour Cream
DNA Sour Kush aka Headband
Paradise Seeds Sensi Star
Paradise Seeds Wappa
Magus Seeds Warlock
Magus Seeds Motavation
Serious Seeds Chronic

And of course some of my own Big Bud x (G13 x Hashplant).

Out off all these strains I tried a vast variety of drying and curing methods and times. Most strains have flavor (the sour cream actually tastes creamy, kinda like plain frozen yogurt) with a good deal of them developing the citrusy flavors just fine.

The plants that should have been more "dank" with that fuely, funky, just weedy smell were the Sour Kush, the Sensi Star, and the Cole Train.

Out of those the only one that really impressed was the Sensi Star. Definitely that old school "damp redwood forest" taste.

It took 6 days to reach a particular point of dryness. I took all the large fan leaves (with stems longer than 1 inch) but left the smaller sugar leaves until I trimmed before jarring. I noticed a very lemony smell at first but this turned more and more pine-sap as time went on.

To maintain this flavor and smell I only burped for about 2 minutes. Just long enough to exchange the air. And I did this twice a day (morning and night) I think the short, frequent burpings are important.

Here's my thoughts on that. As the plant is curing it is off gassing. Not all of these gases are good though and that by leaving your buds sealed all day in that funky air they pick up this kind of sweetish, creamy, kind of scent. When you exchange the gases in the jar with fresh air I feel like the plant (though "dead") responds by curing a little crisper, less "creamy" and with more of the flavor you are looking for.

So... Of everything I tried my method is this:
Flush
Allow media to nearly dry out
Harvest before lights come on during dark period
Remove all large fan leaves with stems longer than 1 inch protruding from the buds (trash/burn)
Hang the entire plant upside down in a dark, ventilated, area like a closet with a fan
Hopefully take 6 to 7 days to dry to the point where stems "snap" but there is still a small amount of moisture remaining
Trim off residual sugar leaves (this goes to hash making)
Jar
Burp every 12 hours for <5 minutes for 15 days

That is what I did. That's how I got the flavor and smell you're looking for. I'm not certain that any one of these processes is the important one while others are negotiable.

Sensi Star + Longer drying + Short Burpings

Good luck to you in your own endeavors.

PLAIN & SIMPLE if u over dry ur bud u most likely wont get the smell u should of got..i cut my plant and hang it without cutting anything TEMP 68 HUMIDITY 40-45%..after a couple days the fan leafs dry out and i pull all of em off the plant and start cutting branches and hang them to dry..then whenever there dried properly to my liking i manicure all the nugs and start my cure. i cure for 2-10weeks

I appreciate everybody's reply...what about the having to squeeze to get smell problem? Anybody have/had this problem happening? I've been curing this sweet afgani for 2-3 weeks it has a nice smell and flavor but my LSD had to be squeezed to really get the smell of the bud...it does smell good just has to be squeezed..
