ive heard topping at 2 or 3rd nodes produces 2 stocks (for pot)
and topping at the 5th will produce FOUR king buds ..

but would this have any correlation with growing salvia D. ?

Not quite... you top above the 1st true node for 2 colas and you top above the second true node for 4 cola's. The higher up you go the more, smaller colas you get

The salvia tends to shoot up baby plants from around the base as it matures, mine has a a 2 week old baby and its doing much better than a cutting does in a long time.
P.S. my sally got topped acidentaly by a car door, and is just bushing out if anything. It was a salvage job, with heavy insect infestation wich just a few days worth of exposure to the carnivirous creatures that scour my garden, cured. I don't believe in useing agricultural pesticides.
Especailly usefull is a tiny wasp, I find hunting around the sally often. My weed plants more often are guarded by mantises.

The little sherif badge next to Journal this post, underneath each post. Rep meter above your avatar.
Tips burning can mean anything from overferting to too high sun intensity.
Indoors mine is in a window under a veranda so it gets no direct sun, outdoors I leave it in one of my shadehouses... not an option with our october winds.

I can't help you with the 5th node thing, Id practice getting one cutting through to soil stage first, I killed tonnes.
